.270 WIN Long Range?
 

I bought a Remington 700 SPS .270WIN cal. So far i havent been able to test it at any range beyond 200m. Now i know that you can hunt large game up to 500m with that round, but im curious if anyone has experience using this caliber at longer ranges even if it were for varmint hunting or target shooting. im just curious as to its accuracy at past 600m not so much on take down power. Anyone have any info to share? On paper the round should be accurate up to 600+m i just wanna know the honest limitations of this caliber and not only what is rumored.

ive used a few differentammo brands mostly 130 and 150 gr but what works best with you? Obviously not all ammo works as well with all guns but maybe some pointers as what manufacters work best with the rem 700 series? Thanks

I have that gun as well. Mine shoots the 130 grain Federal fusions very well. The 270 is now known for its accuracy in the way the 308 would be but in a good barrel ,which IMO you have, its no slouch either. I did some 500 meter silhouette shooting with the 270 and with the right bullet and a good shooter 500-600 meters should be doable. IMO its the best pure deer rifle ever made. Many don't coach its use for elk and moose but its certainly capable if the hunter is up to the task. Been There Done That.

It made its reputation with the 130 grain bulleet and a good bullet of that weight will handle most all big game hunting. The 130 Barnes TXS should make the old war horse even better.

I once shot a relatively small Sitka blacktail buck on Hinchinbrook Island AK with a Mannlicher-Schoenauer 270 carbine at a range of close to 500 yards, give or take. He was across a 300-yard wide glacier from me on the side of a mountain, and bedded down on a rocky slab perhaps 200 yards below my position, which was at the top of the glacier. After shooting him, it took me an hour and a half to climb up, cross above the glacier, and descend to his elevation to begin working on him. Since there was no way back down to sea level from his location, my hunting buddy and I had to put the meat in our packs, tie the head onto the packframe, and climb back up above to the spot wherewe shot him from, and cross the glacier again before we could start down the mountain.

I shot this deer at about 12:30, and it was 7:30 PM when we staggered back out on the beach where we'd tied up our boat!

The load I used was the old-style Nosler Partition 150-grain bullet and 53.5 grains of IMR 4350. MV was 2820 FPS from that 20" barrel, 1/9" twist.

Later on, while stationed at Ft. Carson, CO., I used to shoot this same rifle at distances up to 600 meters on the KD range. It was plenty accurate enough out at 600 to kill big gsame at that range, and shot tighter groups out there than the M14's. (4X Lyman All-American scope on the rifle.)In addition, the Nosler Partition bullet would still expand at that range too.

I no longer own a .270, but still regard it as an exceptional cartridge. If I didn't have three 7X57mm's, I'd buy another .270!

like eldeguello, I've taken whitetails, antelope and mulies with my old Rem 700 .270. Ranges were from literally point blank to over 400 yds. Using 130 gr Nosler ballistic tips over 55 gr of IMR4350, this rifle/load combo is extremely accurate in my rifle. Two years ago I dropped a nice 4x4 mulie at a ranged 437 yds. Even at this range the bullet exited the opposite side of the chest and by the looks of the exit hole, performed as it should have.
Using this same load in the hunter class sillouette shoots, I had little trouble knocking down the rams at 500 meters. But as much as I like the .270, for target shooting there are better cartridges out there to do that job. Ballistically, its hard to beat a 168 or 180 .308bullet. That's probably why you see so many 30 caliber rifles in long range competition.
