Ambi safety or not?
 

I'm would like to purchase a Springfield 1911 (model unknown as of right now), 45ACP.

There is no CCW where I live, so the firearm would be used mostly on the range and if needed, protect my property.

Is it ultra-important to have the ambi safety?

I like the idea of having one for being able to manipulate the safety with your off hand after an injury, but the likelihood of actually needing it is slim, I think. You'd probably already have the safety off and the mag half spent anyway.

They are often offered on competition guns since several of the handgun shooting sports require you to shoot certain stages with your off hand.

The only downside to getting one that I've heard of is that it can be accidentally be knocked off-safe more easily when carrying, but since you live in the land of the disarmed cheeseheads...

1911's are very modular, so you can just get the plain Jane now, and upgrade later. You can do it yourself without paying a gunsmith.

I like the look of the ambi safety, I agree with bulzeye on the practical application.

Pro: They are good for shooting games.

Con:They make detail stripping the gun difficult. The safety is two pieces dovetailed together in a tight snap-fit in the middle. You need to slip a thincredit card under the right side safety and pry hard until it unsnaps to get the rest of the gun apart. Its a major PITA compared to the standard safety.

If you don't need it don't buy it. More crap to break. Simple is good.
