12 or 20 Gauge

Hello, newbie here! I was going to go and buy my first shotgun and it is probaly going to be a remington 870 super mag combo. Wasn't sure which gauge I should get? What r some factors I should consider? Is one better than the other for deer and turkey? I am just a little confused and would appreciate any help any of you can give me!! Thank You!!

If your looking for an all around gun then 12ga, If your just going to be upland hunting or small game 20ga is a better choice. You can always put lighter loads in the 12 than heavier in the 20.

Smart move with an 870. I would suggest going for a 12g. I personally would rather be a little over powered than not have enough umph when I need it.

Also, don't quote me on this because I've only heard it, but I believe later on down the line you could get a 20g barrel for the 870?

I would say 12 gage as well. I have the 870 xpress supermag combo and like it very much.

Get the 12 gauge. The 12 will do anything the 20 will plus a little more. You can always shoot lighter field loads in the 12 if recoil is a problem, but you can't make the 20 take any more shot!

If you buy the 12 your set for life. Not knowing your age i would suggest the 12. if your a younger person or a small light adult maybe the 20 is the way to go but like every one has said. you can always shave off but you cant add to it. and there is no other way than the 870 in my book

For deer and turkey, I would go with the 12ga. The 20ga will work well but you're probably better off with the versatility the 12ga has to offeryou for a first shotgun.

For upland birds and small game I prefer the 20ga.

12 gauge does very well for all aplications of a shotgun. The lightest loads all the was up to super duper magnums. Alot of bear guides like 'em with buckshot (or slugs) loads for back up guns. Slugs work well for deer and the turkey magnums are, well, good for the turks. The remington 870 turkey super magnum is an awesome choice. Long enough barrel for most applications. If you plan on shoting alot of sugs, get a rifled barrel as well.
