44 40... anyone hunting with one?

Just curious. I see these in an occasional piece, in fact, more often than I would expect given the age of the round. Looks like it handloads up to a respectable punch if you have a modern piece.

There is a Colt Sheriff's model out there calling my name but so far, I have resisted. I saw a lever rifle too, I think it was a brass framed replica.

Had one.
Ancient.
Weak....

If you like "old" and "western" but are looking for something competent, then I'd recommend the 45-70.

Heh heh. Got that. Yah, ballistics look a bit tepid unless one handloads.

Its ballistics may not look like much but it puts a big hole in whatever it hits.;)I have one and Idon't hunt with it much anymore since the 44
Mag came along.

Wondering if you ever had a chance to bag deer with it, James. Historically, it sounds like it may have been used for that. Not a flashy round, but it does have caliber & bullet weight going for it.

I have one butdo nothunt with it. It was gifted to me by a family member that had used it for hunting for deer in the bushes around his farm. Boy does that thing make holes.

I shot a antelope with it once and several deer. My Grandpa shot countless numbers of elk with it when he hunted off his horse. I shot a big old corner post with it once and blew it completly in half. Like you said its no speed demon. Its about like a mild loaded 44 Mag.

Thanks James. It seems like once you hit a threshold bullet diameter, weight, and acceptable velocity, they just keep eatin'. The "gun that won the west."

Dad has shot a couple deer and a hog with his 38-40 which is the same case just sized down to .40 (38) insteasd of a .44 I think he hand loaded up a 200gr lead bullet and was shooting it from a modern Win 94. He has a pair of Ruger Vaquero's that will shoot 38-40's and a second cylinder which will shoot 40 S&W's
