same old question
i know its the oldest question out there but what are your views.
1. mossberg 500 vs remington 870 and 2.AR-15 vsAK47 |
RE: same old question
remington 870. my dad has the mossberg 500 and i like the 870 more.
ive never owned or shot either of these guns but if i was going to buy one it would be the AR-15 |
RE: same old question
I love my mossberg due to the safety being located on the back of the reciever and the action release being located behind the trigger guard. They are in great locations. But Mossbergs customer service sucks!

RE: same old question
Same question? yup. Same failure to not do a search KNOWING it's a repeat question...yup.
1) 870. 2) personally, neither. but w/o knowing which makes...hard to tell |
RE: same old question
1. 870
2. I cheated and bought an AK chambered in .223 |
RE: same old question
from your choices
mine are the 870 and the AR-15 |
RE: same old question
I don't own either a AR15 or a AK. But I do own both a 870 and a 500. Although I believe the 870 is better made I like both equally. I've killed more deer with my Mossberg. If your thinking of buying the Mossberg will save you a few bucks and last a long time. The Remington will last until hell freezes over.....

RE: same old question
Depends on the use. Self defense/combat, the Mossberg 500. Faster loading and safety operation. And an AK of course. Nothing like wood and steel. Just my 2cents

RE: same old question
870 and 500 are so close it really doesn't matter. Both work really well and come at similar prices. Although you do get all three chokes with a mossberg and I like the youth models better as well. It really boils down which feels and looks better to you.
As for the AR vrs the AK, no question the AR is the better weapon. The AK functions fine, but other than that it is a cheap stamped POS that looks like it was made in someones garage with basic hand tools. And they shoot about as accurate as they look. However in their defense they were meant to be that way. They made with loose tolerances and built crudely out of cheap materials so they would be cheap to mass produce and function great. Being that they are a short to mid range combat weapon accuracy was not as important as reliability. The AR is a quality weapon machined to close tolerances with good quality control. There are many different variants and after market parts for them. They are also very accurate, and if maintained properly function just as well as an AK. After owning both I would take a good SKS over an AK any day, but I would rather have an AR. My opinion anyway. Paul |

RE: same old question
Done Mossberg and done 870.... my choice is the 870,
yet theMossy 500 is okay. Still have AR and AK.... my choice is the AR, yet theAK is okay. |
RE: same old question
i have both the 870 and the 500 in my opinion the 870 blows the 500 away. the one downfall of the 870 is that it is tough to load new shells because of that mag tube follower. one reason that i also think that the 870 is a better gun is the matte finish. the 500 has a finish that gives of a glare which is not the best thing when you are hunting.
hands down, ak |
RE: same old question
Kinda random, but having just watched Cast Away last night. This question got me thinking which of these firearms would last on a desert island for four years with minimal maintenance? I'd take the Mossy 500 and an AK.

RE: same old question
wreck,
i was reading another forum about the 500 vs 870 and a person wrote that when he was in the service they were issued both the 500 and the 870 and he said that everbody wanted the 870 because only with a little amount of water the500 would jam, not fire or not eject.now i feel safe to say the 870 out performes the 500 in all aspects. |
RE: same old question
Id take the 870 and AK because i know when the chips are down both will go bang.
|
RE: same old question
This isnt scientific but I get to talk with alot of servicemen that have had firefights in Bagdad/Iraq and the middle east and have been told by more than a couple that the Mossberg's have let them down while the 870's hang in there.

RE: same old question
I will have to agree with doubleA on this one, I too have heard about the shortcomings of the Mossberg 500 in firefight situations, while I have heard nothing but good about the Remington 870

RE: same old question
The mossberg the military uses is not your off the shelf mossy 500 for starters. It has been upgraded with some metal parts instead of plastic ones. However the action is pretty much the same. It also passed the mil spec tortue test that the military runs it's weapons through. Remington did not submit the 870 for testing. I am quite sure it would pass as well.
Functionally the guns are near identical, one is no better than the other as far as dependability goes. And take my word for it, a mossberg will fire when wet. It will also fire when covered in mud and ice, been there. If anything the mossberg would work better in these conditions because the tolerances are not quite as tight as an 870 (from what I understand). Much like the AK, it has loose tolerences so it can be made cheaper and function better in nasty conditions. It gives up accuracy for it though. From what I have seen when a 500 or 870 fails to function it is usually operator error. They are pretty simple designs for the most part. They are both being replaced by the Benelli M1014 semi automatic though. Paul |
