FAQs: Barrel Break-In Procedure Q. What is the barrel break-in procedure? A. Although there may be different schools of thought on barrel break-in, this is what Precision Shooting Magazine recommends: STEP 1 (repeated 10 times) [ul][*]Fire one round[*]Push wet patches soaked with a powder solvent through the bore[*]Push a brush through the bore (5 times in each direction)[*]Push dry patches through the bore (2 times)[*]Push wet patches soaked with a copper solvent through the bore[*]Push a brush through the bore (5 times in each direction)[*]Push dry patches through the bore (2 times)[*]Push a patch with 2 drops of oil through the bore [/ul]STEP 2 (repeated 5 times) [ul][*]Fire a 3 shot group[*]Repeat the cleaning procedure from STEP 1 after each group [/ul]STEP 3 (repeat 5 times) [ul][*]Fire a 5 shot group[*]Repeat the cleaning procedure from STEP 1 [/ul]They recommend the use of a patch with 2 drops of oil after the cleaning so that you are not shooting with a dry bore. It is also advisable to use a powder solvent and copper solvent from the same manufacturer to be sure they are chemically compatible. This from Savage Arms web site. |

RE: BARREL BREAK IN QUESTIONS
This is about the best read I've seen on the subject of barrel break-in in a while:
http://www.24hourcampfire.com/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php/ubb/showflat/Number/1282969/page/1#Post1282969 BTW, on that forum Mule Deer is John Barsness, a highly respected writer for Handloader and Rifle magazines. As for me, I don't bother with any kind of tedious break-inany more. BTDT. But it's your rifle so have at it if you want. |

RE: BARREL BREAK IN QUESTIONS
The break in procedure is not as important as something that I think has not yet been mentioned
USE A BORE GUIDE! Very easily could ruin a new barrel if you follow all of this advise about 10 strokes , stand on one foot, switch hands, 5 strokes, bite your tongue, shoot 1 shot, start over ect ect LOL |
RE: BARREL BREAK IN QUESTIONS
Whatever procedure you use be sure to accomplish same on a full moon in February.
|
RE: BARREL BREAK IN QUESTIONS
Yes, of course, the full moon is very important, but don't forget to add the ground up bat nuts in your Hoppes #9. If you don't, it'll all be for naught.

RE: BARREL BREAK IN QUESTIONS
Just like "engine break in" different routines but basically 2 camps on the issue.
A) Do care, step softly and ease it into the real world OR B) Drive it like you stole it Though both agree regular maint. and proper components are required after this intial stage. Basically do whatever you please just remember that once "break in" is finished a little care and attention after this period will make for a longer/happier relationship. scope eye, to determine if your gun shoots different or better cleaned vs fouledjust take note to what your poi and group size was beforeand after its cleaned. If it takes a few shots to settle down then you will want to hunt on a slightly fouled bore. Not big deal as verifing POI should be part of your routine before hunting, etc. |
