.17 hmr
Well I was at a local gunshop today and I was looking at a 22-250. Then he pulled outa savage 17 hmr and said I could pop coyotes up to 250 yards. Is this true. I didnt think so, and will still probably get a 22-250 but was just wondering if this sounded right. I thought a .17 hmr was more like a .22 mag and would be accurate at around 100 - 150 yards.
Thanks, Higgins PS. The .17 was 300 dollars cheaper so I dont think he was trying to cheat me. |
RE: .17 hmr
I have a .17 hmr great gun. It COULD kill coyotes at 250 yards, I would not suggest it though. Id say about 100 - 150 yardswould be the most you could kill a coyote with it. Thats if your confident at that far. A .17 hmr is a necked down .22 mag brass, made to shoot the .17 caliber bullet not a .22 caliber bullet. It flys a heck of alot faster then a .22 mag but its also lighter. I think im not sure on this so dont hold me to it , but a .22 mag lead is like 42 grains? A .17 bullet is only 17 grains or 20 grains what ever bullet you buy. If ya got any other questions just PM me

RE: .17 hmr
250 is a bit to far. I personally wouldn't hunt coyotes with a 17 hmr. I own one and love it,but it is a little to small for yotes. Unless you go for head shots. I wouldn't plan on hunting in the wind much either. A .17 hmr is pushed around alot in the wind. [/align] |
RE: .17 hmr
If your main use for your rifle is coyotes then stick with the 22-250 or even at least a 22 hornet. The .17 hmr will kill a coyote, it won't be spectacular and you may have to track the sucker. I have seen a coyote shoot by a friend at 150 yrds with a nef single shot he shot it in the neck and it ran about 50ft. and fell dead. Also don't just look at the price of the rifle when you buy it look into ammo options and cost. I like the .243 and the .223 for coyotes.

RE: .17 hmr
The 17 HMR will work for yotes but the 22-250 is a much more suitable gun. As for shooting a coyote at 250 yardswith the 17, yes it could be done but its not something to be recommended.
