Hey Big Country

Did you ever get your 7mmstw shooting good? I am in the process of building a new rifle,I had the thought of an 7mmstw but I have a .270wsm & a .300wm so I dont think it would really fill ant gap there. What do you think?

Yea, I got it pretty acceptable. I was getting consistent 1.1MOA in 10MPH winds. So I figured once the wind settles, I have a nice load. Shot one group out to 300yards, but with that wind it threw the shots around pretty good to 5" groups.

I am shooting 160gr Accubonds and can't remember the exact load but using close to max RL25. I tried IMR7828, H1000, and both were very slow. I think I was shooting under 3Kfps with both. But with RL25, I am getting over 3150fps. Nothing breath taking, but shoots well. I don't see any pressure signs, so I might go up one more grain or so. I have only tried this one bullet. I have some 140's that mossy33 gave me I might try for a long range deer load.

I dont' know what to tell ya about the STW. I wanted a 7mmRemmag when I got this. But got it for a good price. I know some people have faster barrels than I got. With my same load they are getting 3300fps. If I achieved that speed, I would be pretty happy.

Well I just cant decide ,I see that the stw has some great potential but I just cant see it fitting in my cabinet.I thought about a .264wm but I have a 6.5x284 so that canceled that out. I just have the itch to build.I guess something inbetween a .300wm and a 45/70 would be more fitting.I have
.220swift
.243win
6.5x284
.270wsm
.300wm
45/70
.50bmg

What? You dont' have a 06 cased gun? Every gunnut has to have at least a 270win or a 30-06. And really should own something in the 308 case, but I see you have a 243win.

I say if your going to go with a high powered 7mm, go with the RUM. I neck size my STW, so it chambers on teh shoulder and belt. But I like beltless cases. The RUM is rough on barrels however.

If yougoing to build something, maybe look into something radical like a warbird. Or that super fast 7mm ridge runner shoots.

younggun308 03-27-2007 11:51 AM

RE: Hey Big Country

I would say get a .458 RUM, it's listed on the T/C Contender (The Rifle, not the Pistol)availability of calibers. Here it is, find it on the left, under ".458 cal".

http://www.matchgrademachine.com/gunshop/pages.php?pageid=21

You could also find some other cartridges that might just inspire you.

Mentionedhe is thinking something between .308 and .458 calibers of which healready has in the cabinet. So YG why suggest another .458???

younggun308 03-27-2007 12:09 PM

RE: Hey Big Country

Because it's a rare, unique gun, I mean, it's not just another .458, it's a .458 RUM. Big difference, IMO.

RE: Hey Big Country

No I got rid of my .270win after the .270wsm.I did think about the 7mmrum and my next choice like skeeter said a .35 cal. Man this is alot harder then when I only had 2 rifles!!!!!!!!! And that warbird is a good calibur ballisticly speaking.I have never owned a 7mm so that will be a new experince for me if that is what I choose.

Well, if you go for cartridge spacing at all, then it looks like it is "thumper time."

50 BMG's are too heavy to hunt with for the most part, though they sure are fun --- the shock wave is a real sensation.
45-70's are great as a close quarters lever gun cartridge, but hardly king of the "458 hill."

That leaves you the wonderful zone of huntable, packable rifles between .325 and 416....
You might considera 416 Rigby, not for the faint of heart though.
Or for something truly easy going and fun, yet effective, a 375 H&H....
One planet, one rifle, Holland's .375!

Good Luck

Roger that ,I am one of those shooters that likes recoil.416rigby I might have to try that. It's on the list.I do like calibur spacing, thats whats holding me up on a decision.

RE: Hey Big Country

You know I have always wanted a 35 whelen. Never owned a 35 cal anything. But I feel it would be a nice caliber for my hunting, here is my calibers

204
22-250
223 Rem
243
270win
7mm-08
7mmSTW
30-30
308 win
30-06
300win mag
44magnum
45-70
460S&W

I am totally void between .308 and 45-70

younggun308 03-28-2007 01:17 PM

RE: Hey Big Country

Maybe you should get a Remington 673 in .350 Rem. Magnum, the 673's in my area are going on discount, and they're REALLY great rifles.

I have the .308 version.

Me too I need to add between them. maybe a 375h&h? maybe a 358wm

The 7mmstw can be a very accurate cartridge. The links below show typical groups from my 7mmstw rifles.

Now, your talking, 375HH would be very interesting.

EKM 03-29-2007 04:59 PM

RE: Hey Big Country

IMHO, the .323, .325;), .348, .35's are all a bit more obscure and kinda short on bullet selection.

.338, .375, .416, .475, and .510 dominate the "caliber slots."

I'd recommend the following as credible destinations for your next stop if proceeding upthe "toteable thumper" scale:

for the .338 slot: 338 WinMag, 340 Weatherby, 338 RUM, 338-378 Weatherby or
for the .375 slot: 375HH, 375 RUM, or378 Weatherby

Probably best to hold off on the .416's andfull strength .458'suntil you've cut your teeth on the above unless you're really feeling salty and looking for some high intensity entertainment.

DANTHEHUNTER 03-29-2007 05:45 PM

RE: Hey Big Country

I really dont mind the recoil. So that isnt a factor in my selection.

RE: Hey Big Country

Speaking of the 375 H&H, Ihave a Sako M75 stainless/synthetic and topped it off with a Zeiss 3x12x56 Diavari and am very pleased with it's accuracy....typically shoots 3/4" groups. I mentioned this because the M75's are being replaced with the newer M85 CF model and good deals can be had presently on them.

Recentlygot a 6.5x284 and havent fired a round through it yet and just ordered a Sako TRG 42 in 338 Lapua yesterday to play with. I have quite a few custom rifles but now pretty much only buy higher end factory guns due to not losing as much money on them if and when I get rid of them.:D

Well then,in the .510 caliber slot, there is always the 500A2....
Not a wildcat.... SAAMI certified....
a 460 Weatherby necked up to .510, most neverneed a replacement barrel.

If you are willing to single feed them, you can always load 50 BMG bullets on them.
Let's see, a huntable rifle weighing in at 12 pounds (lighter if you prefer), no muzzlebrake....

375 H&H, as classic as a 30-06, and a puppy dog to shoot.

Check out the trigger pull and adjustment on your specific Ruger before you buy, many of them are really poor withlittle remedy, that is unless you are willingto let the chips fall where they may and justupgradethe trigger unitoutright if necessary

I would liked to been able to do that but unfortunately the gun shop that I purchased the Ruger is to far to drive so I may have them change the trigger before shipping. Thanks for the heads up...
