Shotgun scope?

Which is the best all around scope for a shotgun?
I don't really like the lighted ones. I like the variable power ones, because I hunt a very wide range of habitat. I also don't want a real expencive one, just a work horse.

I use a 2x tasco shotgun scope. It works great since
most of my shots are under 50 yards.

I use a Bushnell 3-9X. It works well for most habitats. It was an inexpensive scope but has taken a lot of abuse. The one thing I noted is that the scope rings loosen very quickly so unless you put some loctite or something to keep the nurled screws tight, you need to check them regularly.

Can I use a regular rifle scope with different rings? I put one on it one time and it seemed like it would do fine but someone said that you need the longer eye relief.

I use a Simmons 2X. I don't want anymore power than that for turkeys. The Pro Diamond reticle makes for a great range finder.

You certainly CAN use a rifle scope on a shotgun!! The first one I ever put on a slug gun was a Weaver J2.5, and it worked great! CAUTION!! Get one with LONG eye relief, and mount it as far forward as possible to avoid getting hit!!

What kind of rings and mounts do I need? I have a mossberg 500, and I put the scope off my 30-30 on it, and it looked pretty good. It seemed to fit fine with the "see through" mounts and all. Do you think it would preform alright if I put locktite and stuff on the screws?

I know it's alot of questions, but no one around my area has ever put a scope on a shotgun.

I am real happy with my Swift 1.5x-4x (or 4.5x). Over the last 10 years it had taken a lot of abuse from the recoil my pump shotgun shooting 3inch magnum slugs. Never had any trouble with this low cost scope, its a solid performer by any measure. It now sits on my new slug gun and has helped me harvest two tasty whitetails this season.

Also- I have heard that shotgun scopes are built to handle the abusive recoil from a shotgun, and that a rifle scope may not be as good at taking the abuse.

Good Luck.

RE: Shotgun scope?

I have little regard for "see-thru" mounts. The ones I have seen put the scope too high up in the air, leaving your face hanging there with no support, and they appear less strong than other styles of mount. But, by all means use loctite, the blue stuff made for guns. Due to the recoil of a slug gun, you cannot have a mount that is too secure!!

Keep yore powder dry!!
