If you want a short action check out the Micro Hunters, they are smaller versions of the A-bolts. I have a 243wssm in Hunter model(same size as micro) and a 270WSM in the Medallion and love them both.

IMO the 243 is a great deer cartridge.

If I were you, Pea, I would get a .22-250 instead, or better yet, a .220 Swift, I think those are better varmit rounds.

I too, have no use for the 243, I have never owned, shot, or liked the .243 Win., it's just a catchy name to go along with "younggun".

I have a .308, but IMO, it's too big for varmits, great deer round, though.

I think the A-Bolt is a great gun, my dad has one in 7mm Rem Mag, but I still think you should get a .22-250 or .220 Swift, .243 is a tiny, yetdecent deer round.

younggun still has alot of growing up to do. He still has no clue what he is talking about. Since he has never owned a 22-250, 243, 220 Swift, etc etc etc.....

243 is a great 'yote round and it will double very nicely for a deer round/antelope, etc.

Nothing wrong with the .243 for coyotes or deer, it does mess up the pelt on a coyote, but I don't kill them for pelts...

I've had pretty good luck with the .243 on deer as well, have killed about 150 with mine...

Good thing about a .243...You don't have to worry about the scope jumping up and biting you....

To be fair to younggun... The original post was about a rifle for Coyotes. It wasn't about a dual purpose Coyote/Deer rifle. The .243 is an outstanding dual purpose rifle. I love mine. But, the 22-250 or the Swift are quite well suited to being a dedicated coyote/varmint rifle.

I do havea 22-250 in my house, and shoot it often. 220 Swift is a cartridge my family has lots of experiance with for killing coyotes and even antelope in Nebraska on long-distance shots. They got rid of it though, the 220 Swift, since it was a dying cartridge at the time, but it's actually gotten some popularity in recent years.

I've read in Field and Stream magazine about some coyote hunting guide who likes the .22-250 Ackley Imp. But I have no clue as to what the benefits are. I've also heard a couple things about the 6.5x284 Norma, but I don't know anything about it except that Savage makes one.

A hot stepping 55-60gr .243 pill will out perform the 22-250 in the velosity department and a higher BC 70-90gr 243 will shoot flatter, buck wind better and hit harder than the 22-250 or swift at longer ranges.I found that the 85gr sierra gameking HPBT holds tegether pretty good and makes a decent coyote/wolf/small deer bullet, but perfer the 100gr bullets fordedicated deer use.

I actually have owned and shot 22-250, 220 swift, 223, 25/06, even a 6mm/06 and settled on the 243 as the most practical of the bunch.
