Best deal you ever got on a gun?
I always hear of guys getting great deals but it never happens to me.
Until this Aug. at a gun show. I had taken my S&W model 686 plus with me to find rings and a scope to go on it. I passed a table with about 14 or 15 rifles on it. The older gentleman sitting there wanted to buy the handgun but I told him it was not for sale. He then offered any rifle on his table for it,with the exception of 2 sakos. I am now the proud owner of a Rem. 40x in 222 mag. The gun is in absoulte mint condition. I paid $475 for the S&W and have been offered $1000 for the 222mag. Lets hear your best deal! |
RE: Best deal you ever got on a gun?
I have stumbled across a few good deals on guns but my best deal was for a browning .243 eurobolt with boss. I was working the sporting goods department at a local retail store and a guy had ordered it and left a deposit of 100 dollars on it, well when it came in he backed out on the deal and lost his 100 dollars. A couple months later christmas time came around and they were going to get ride of a few of the guns they had laying around so the manager market it down to 425 from 450 wich was already 100 dollars off from the guys deposite. I used my 20% off christmas discount on it for a out the door price of $362. I got a boss CR for $15 and rings and a 4-14x44 scope for another $80 bucks and ended up with the most accurate bolt gun I had ever shot for a grand total of $457. I dialed the boss in with 100gr Sierra SBT federal premiums loads and it will shoot honest .75-1" groups all day long at 100 yards. I have killed 5 whitetails, 2 fox, and a coyote with it from ranges of 70-320 yards. My next best deal was a nearly new Raging bull 454 cassul, got it for $300 from a friend of my dads, he couldn't handle the muzzle blast.

RE: Best deal you ever got on a gun?
I got a Savage 116, a Remington 788 action, a Browning A-5 Magnum with no forearm and a busted stock, and a Browning 16 gauge all for a Springfield model 67 shotgun with a modified choke that would shoot 00 buckshot like a slug.

RE: Best deal you ever got on a gun?
I bought a Winchester 88 .308 in excellent condition off a guy that bought it in 1958 for $175, I asked him what he wanted for it and he said $175. First I peed my pants, then I gave him $175.

RE: Best deal you ever got on a gun?
I once purchased a Model 70 Super Grade in .375 H&H made in 1949 from a Captain at Ft. Wainwright Alaska for $125.00. It had a Lyman Alaskan scope in a Jaeger side mount and a Lyman No. 48 receiver sight on it. Seems this guy traded a M 12 Win. shotgun for the rifle at a road house in Canada as he was driving up the Alcan Highway, got to AK with the rifle, fired it two or three times, and decided he liked his .243 a lot better!! I later traded this rifle for a Grade IV BAR. BIG MISTAKE!! Live & learn!!

RE: Best deal you ever got on a gun?
A guy I worked with wanted a 5hp outboard that I had in my shed. He bugged me and bugged me about it. He then offered me his LEFT-HANDED Rem 760 in .270 even up for the motor. The motor was older than dirt and was air-cooled so it sounded like an airplane.
Not only did I get rid of the motor, I got the ultimate deer gun. I'm a lefty, so that was just a bonus! |
RE: Best deal you ever got on a gun?
I gave a rem.870 express and $200.00 for a Browning A-bolt in 25.06 with a leupold 3.5 X 10 X 50 VariX III

RE: Best deal you ever got on a gun?
Not a great deal, but the best I've gotten I guess...bought a german made spanish mauser .308 (forget what model at the moment) for $75, has a springfield barrel on it, and a sporterized stock. Had $30 in work done to glass it and replace the flag safety with one that would function with the glass on, then sold it for $225 at a gun show. Kinda wish I didn't, since it was probably the most accurate non-heavy barreled rifle I'd ever seen, but I didn't need it anymore.
Screw the 10 ring, keep them in the zero!!! |
RE: Best deal you ever got on a gun?
Two mint Browning BLR 81s, one in 7mm/08 wearing a Leupold 2-7x Compact, the other in .284 Win with a Leupold 3-9x Compact. Paid a total of $650.

RE: Best deal you ever got on a gun?
I walked into a gunstore once and saw a side x side shotgun. Turned out the guy who left it on consignment was still in the store. He wanted $100 for it and I didn't have to go through the shop with the deal. Turned out he is a friend of one of my best friend's dad's. It's a 3" 311 Stevens shotgun. Works great.

RE: Best deal you ever got on a gun?
My best deal wasn't really a purchase but a barter deal. My father-in-law told me I could have his 1928 Savage 99f take-down in 300 Savage. All he asked for in return was that I work on his old Model '06 Winchester pump .22. When he gave me the Winchester to begin work it was in an old leather case and had been in his attic for years. It was rusted (surface) badly enough that it needed a blue. I consulted a collector and he agreed that it's value was affected enough by the rust that the re-blue wasn't an issue. Anyway, the blue job was sent to Europe b/c of the high silica content in the steel, and I re-fnished the stock. It came out beautiful!! When I presented it to my father-in-law, he demanded that he pay for it, and he wouldn't take no for and answer.
so, I bacame the owner of the Savage, and when he died 3 years later, he left me the .22. Now I own the only 2 guns he ever owned, and they will NEVER see another speck of rust (in my lifetime). |
RE: Best deal you ever got on a gun?
hmmm, i;d say one of my most favorite deals was my 38 trooper i got from my mom;s old navy friend, she said i wouldn;t shave my beard off i said wanna bet? end of story on that one.
picked up a nice smith and wesson m41 and winchester pump 22 for hundred bucks, i told the guy i only wanted one gun he said it was a package deal so i handed over 200 and he said NO their both 100. then i was in a local bow shop and they only had 1 rifle on the wall, a super dusty savage 99, guy that bought the store back in 92 said it came with the place, i asked him how much, he looked at the price tag from the old store that said 400, he said give me 300. i took it, then he went in the back room and came back with the box and manual, it was brand new!!! nothing super special, just a run of mill 300 savage made in the late 60's. best one i;ve seen so far though. but the best gun deal i know of belongs to a buddy of my uncle;s called grizz. guy walks up to grizz one day at work and asks him if he wants to buy a rifle. grizz says lemme see it, guy pulls out a mint marlin take down 22 lever action, something in the 1905 era, grizz asks how much, guys says i;m kinda down on my luck and i might ask a bit too high but i;ll tell ya what i got 2 bricks of ammo i;ll throw in, gimme 30bucks, "smile, life could be worse.. i could be datin your daughter." |
RE: Best deal you ever got on a gun?
What a great question. I've enjoyed every one of your posts. It reminds me of my father's many stories about trading 4 chickens and a pig for a pre 64 model 70 308.
My story isn't so much a great deal as it was anamazing gift. When I was about 13, I absolutely lived to hunt, still do actually. Anyway, one of my father's friends came over one day with two 22s and a 20 gauge side by side. He said he hadn't hunted in years, andthat I would put them to good use. I of course did, but being just a boy, I never really thought of their value. As it turned out, one of the 22s and the side by side weren't worth alot, although they are great guns. The other 22 however absolutely shocked me when I got it appraised. It is a winchester model 1890, with an octagon barrel, pump action, and fix rear sight. It appraised at $8,000!!! As it is I would never sell it, but it is definately the centerpiece of my collection. Workhorse- Hunt hard. |
RE: Best deal you ever got on a gun?
My dad bought a few guns off a friend of his that was too old to hunt. He got 3 guns a Winchester model 1300 12 guage with 5 boxes of shells, a Interarms 22-250 with 3x9x40 tasco, bipod, 8 boxes of shells and a hard case, and a Anshultz 55D .22 magnum with 4x40 scope for 600.00, hell the anshultz is worth more than that now. We eventually sold the shotgun and .22 mag, biggest mistake we ever made i miss that 22. Back in the summer i traded the interarms evenly for a remington 700 BDL 7mm rem mag, that was the best deal i have ever got.

RE: Best deal you ever got on a gun?

RE: Best deal you ever got on a gun?
So far, I think Halcon wins the golden horseshoe award! I bought a pre 64 M70 featherweight in a pawn shop one time for $250. I think the shop owner looked up the price of the post 64 guns when he priced it. His loss, my gain.

RE: Best deal you ever got on a gun?
I got a 1200 win 12ga, model 66 44-40 Uberti yellow boy, and a Stevens 410 single shot all for $150. Best buy I ever made. Zeak

RE: Best deal you ever got on a gun?
Beat this...
There was a raffle, the top prize was a TV, second prize was a new Mossberg pump action shot-gun in a woodlands camo finish. I believe it was a 3" 12 gauge. So I guess you could say I got a brand new shotgun for a buck!! |
RE: Best deal you ever got on a gun?
A coworker yesterday showed me he just won a Remington 700 ADL .270 Win. for the price of a $5 raffle ticket. Says it was the third gun he has won so far.
My value gun is the 30-06 Savage 110 I hunt with, bought for $199 12 years ago when Best Product stores were going out of business. I think the Marlin and Winchester 30-30's were being liquidated for $179 back then. |
