I've paddled thousands of miles in the back woods. I usually carry a model 66 S&W .357 but a couple of years ago I paddled the McKenzie to the Arctic. Before leaving we checked up on what protection to take. After taking to the R.C.M.P they suggested a short barrel 12 gauge and to take both slugs and 00 buck.Had no difficulties with bears but saw alot.

I would think that a riotgun loaded with slugs would weigh pretty close to a large handcannon and would be easier to carry.
The Ruger Alaskan in .454 might be a good one though.

I always carry my S&W 629 in a chest holster but for serious protection its reallyhard to beat a cross slung guide gun in 45/70. 405gr Kodiak JSP @ 1925fps packs a lot of punch and penetration far superior to most shotgun slugs. The dixie terminator slugs and brenneke big game slugs are supposed to be pretty good though.
I use my guide for for hunting a lot too, and is a great companion in the boat or across the handle bars of the 4 wheeler.
That being said I would gladly take a handful of common sense and precaution over any ammount of firepower.

Load that baby with .410 buckshot and you should be all set. Pretty tough to miss anything with buckshot at close range.

Here are my thoughts.
If you want to stop a big bear before it gets too close you need a big rifle (orshotgun with slugs not buckshot)and fast second shots.
But a long gun is a pain to carry around and so it sometimes ends up left in camp or leaning against a tree out of hands reach. So a handgun may be more useful than a long gun.
A bigass cartridge with lots of BANG and recoil would be good for one shot with two hands. But if a bear is real close and about to bite, then you don't need more power than needed to penetrate some hide and skull bone. A .357 mag. is plenty for that. A double action revolver can be fired withtwo hands at 5 yards or with one hand at 3,2,1, and in his nose.
However they say that pepper spray has an instant effect and that would be nice
