22-250 burn up barrels?
 

Someone told me the 22-250 will burn up barrels because of the high velocity & I'd be better off getting a 223 - any truth here? Looking at mostly shooting coyotes & crows etc. Biggest I'd probably want to go is a 270 just thinking of hunting out west someday. I just won a 257 weatherby mag but saw the cost of the shells - gasp! So hope to sell it and get a little smaller caliber.

I have heard that as weel. I don't know how true it is,but I bought a .223 just in case. Plus my father in-law has a 22.250. If I bought the same gun,I would never hear the end of it. " I told you the 22.250 was the way to go" Or somethinglike that. Now I can tell him I didn't but the same gun because I heard it was junk.hehehe:D

if you handload real barn burners for your .22-250 it will wear out a barrel kinda fast.The way to keep a barrel for a long time is to not get it hot. If you are intosod poodle shooting, take a break and let it cool down.My Remington 700 was originally in .22-250.Firedover 3,500 rounds through that barrel before accuracy slowly started going to pot. In quick succession i had a Hart and a Douglas barrel on it-total waste of money.Neither barrelwas any where near as accurate asthe original Remington barrel.Had it re-barreled by Remington.Thenre-chambered itto.22/308=.22 CHEETA.

Remember, we now have better quality steel and barrels than ever before. With this quality comes better life span of the barrel.
Keep your loads at a reasonable speed/pressure and the barrel will last a very long time. Load hot snot speedsters at max or over consistantly and you'll wear out the barrel sooner rather than later. Also, as a gentleman stated earlier in this post that excessive heat is the evil of barrel life. Very true, so, shoot a few, let it cool a bit, shoot a few and so on....
I'd rather be the most accurate guy on the range than the fastest bullet there!!!

Wssm barrels are subject to even more damage. That is the main reason I didn't buy that .223 wssm A-bolt. To much preasure and heat.

THe A bolt have chrome lined barrel which pretty much take care of the barrel burning.

Mainly, what ruins barrels fast is a lot of shooting with a hot barrel. i suppose the .223 might outlasta .22/250 if you shoot many rounds per day at ground hogs or prairie dogs, and the barrel doesn't have time to cool between shots. But for shooting five or six coyotes per day, the .22/250 will certainly do OK. It does not have as bad a rep for barrel life as the .220 Swift....

YOu sure about that? I have never read and or heard it having a chrome lined barrel. Some of thier old shotguns did. But as far as I know, thier rifles never have. I could be wrong.

I just got done checking. And the A-Bolts do have chrome lined barrel. Learn something every day.
