Default 22-250 vs. 300 win ultra mag

Question?

I am looking for a long range rifle, and I think that I have narrowed it down to the 22-250 and the 300 Win ultra mag. My intentions are to mainly punch paper, but I am trying to get into varmint hunting. With the 300 I can use accelerator bullets, but still have the versitility to up the grain and moose hunt with it. The 22-250 is a well known caliber for varmints, but it is limited as far as anything other than paper punching. I hope you can shed some insight on this for me.

I wouldn't count on very good accuracy with the accelerator bullets. I think you are looking at two very different purposes. If you must use one rifle for varmints, paper punching, and big game, how about something like a .308? It's a very accurate cartridge and I've used one for varmints and big game.

The 22.250 is an outstanding varmint and target gun, but as you said it's too light for big game.

The 300 will kick the snot out of you after shooting varmints all day in various field positions. And I've never had any luck with the acclerator bullets, or heard of anyone else having much luck with them.

300 Win Mag or 300 Rem Ultra Mag, either cartridge is not a varmint round persay and can be a bit hard on the shoulder after a day of shooting. Forget the accelerators. You might be lucky to hit the broadside of a barn with them if you are close enough. If you are looking for a varmint rife that you can use as a deer sized game rifle in a pinch then consider the 243 Win or the 6mm Rem both are very capable of taking deer and are accurate, mild recoiling cartirdges. Moving up you have the 25-06 Rem and the 257 Roberts then there are the 260 Rem and the 6.5X55. I had a buddy that used to pop prarie dogs all day with the same Win Model 70 in 270 Win that he hunted with. The 7mm-08 Rem would also be a good cartridge as would a 308 Win. Lots of choices out there besides a 22-250 Rem or a 300 Win Mag that would probably better serve your needs.

I hunt with a .270 in central part of Michigan. I would like to have an extended range gun set up for that purpose, with a 6 to 24 mil-dot scope. I totally agree that they are two different guns, but I had never heard anything about the accelerators, good thing I have never tried them. It sounds as if the 22-250 is the best gun for the purpose.

Damn I like this web-site, I can get info faster and have several opinions from the people that have tested or know about the product. Glad I was introduced to your group.

Thanks DBL-Lung

All I could say is from squirrels to moose is a pretty big jump . Have you ever thought of just buying another rifle if and when you decide to go moose hunting .Don't make a lot of sense to get your behind kicked for ten or twenty years on targets and squirrels just to say your ready for moose .Forget the 300 would be my suggestion .

There is no such thing as a win ultramag so I am assuming you mean the 300rem ultra mag or the 300wsm.Either way neither would work well as a varmint rifle. The recoil is too stiff for a day of varmint shooting and the barrel life would be extremely short for varmint shooting. As the others have already stated; accuracy with accelerators (even if you can find the bullets and sabots to load as they are not available for either cartridge from the factory )is not nearly good enough for varmint shooting.

i think that if you wanted a middle ground the .308 or the 25-06 would be my choices. of course one of each is always the best option

For the long range paper punching and varmits how bout a .220 Swift. My cousin has one in a Ruger and its just plain out bad. The 22-250 is a great gun too, i had one in a interarms and it killed alot of deer for the guy i bought it from. I traded it for a model 700 7 mag and the guy who has it now is still blasting deer. But your not going to want to try those guns on moose. Id have to go with diyj98 when i say go with the .308. Get it in a really good varmit rifle with a long barrel and use hight quality bullets. The .308 was the gun of choice for long range shooters and target killers for years plus with a good bullet like a partition and great shot placement it should do the number on moose. Not to mention it will destroy all varmits.

dcan,

Just to answer your question...

I am 30 years old, I have bow hunted for 18 years and gun hunted for 16 years. I had heard from a few people at the Sportsman Club that they were using a 300 win mag with accelerators and liked them. All of them had muzzle breaks so there was a very mild kick.

I was trying to get information about the accelerators and to get the most bang for my buck. I don't have the cash to fold out for two guns. I would like to start varmit hunting, and my dad and I are looking at booking a moose hunt next year.

Sorry if I sounded young and ignorant to you.
