remington model 788

ok my girlfriend's dad has a model 788 in 223. he is the original owner of the gun. he told me that he has been having problems with the bolt jamming up on him. his magazine spring he says is out of whack and sometimes doesn't work. do you think that he needs a new magazine? i have looked on ebay and other guns sites and they are either too expensive or out of stock and i know that this gun has been discontinued for a long time. correct me if i am wrong. also would a 222 magazine work for a 223? i appreciate the help.

not certain but im doubting they are interchangeable. I would see if a local gunsmith can tweak it abit. I once fixed a spring in a mag once so im sure about anyone can do it.

The 222 Magazine should work. However you can probably just reshape the one thats in it now. Try Gun Part Corp for a magazine. The 788 was a good shooting rifle. The weak point was the bolt handle sometimes came off as they were soldered on. I had several of them and the handle came off one of mine. Remington said it couldn't be fixed but I found a gunsmith who didn't agree and he repaired it for me. Make sure that the magazine spring is not in back-words.

Buy a new spring unless the feed lips are bent

I have a 788 Remington in 223. I bought a brand new spare clip from the Sportsmans Guide for about $18.00. Try www.thesportsmansguide.com
They should have it.

The retainer lip on the clips are either bent in too far or the clip itself is. This clip just needs reshaped. If not, then be sure the follower is in correctly and not sticking....which I bet it is sticking. If this is the case, manipulating the clip body is the answer once again. And of course the spring may need replaced. You can get new springs and followers from several mail order places, Midway, Brownells, and Numrich are just a few. Numrich may have some used clips or followers/springs.

By the way....the 223 clip will work. I had one for a 222 I owned. The 788s were way underrated and are now worth several times what they cost new. Very ACCURATE.
