RE: First Hand Gun - What 9mm would you buy?
Take a look the Springfield XD, Ruger, and Taurus. They're all priced pretty well and are worth the investment, IMHO. The Rugers are ugly, but well-built. Taurus has really been moving up recently with some solid self-defense pistols designs on a reasonablebudget.
Talk to your friends or people here on the board who live in your area about firearms dealers. Probably the best thing you could do is go visit one and tell the dealer what you're looking for and for how much. If he/she knows his/her stuff, you'll have probably at least half a dozen options to choose from, maybe more. Get one that fits your grip comfortably and has a reputation for reliability. |

RE: First Hand Gun - What 9mm would you buy?
Thanks for all the feedback.A couple of people mentioned the following guns, and here are the prices I've found them for so far:
Ruger P95 9mm Blue, w Rail 15 round for about $350 after shipping etc... Glock 17 or 19 for around $500 shipping etc... Springfiled XD for about $475 Kahr CW9 for about $400 Walther P99 for about $530 The SIG and H&K look great, but were over $600 Anyknow know how much of a difference will I notice from the Ruger to the Glock or Springfield? I'm really only concerned with reliability/dependability, accuracy, and recoil (less is better). It doesn't have to be a pretty gun or conceal cary. |

Might also check out a CZ-75B. They are pretty much an all-steel design, reliable, accurate, and cost around $400. More metal and less plastic makes the pistol a little heavier, so it has a little less recoil than some of the plastics.

My local gun range has around 20 rental guns.
If you are able, I would suggest renting a few different brands in a few different calibers, and take them out for a test drive. Good luck and welcome to the sport. Victor |
RE: First Hand Gun - What 9mm would you buy?
This being your first handgun why not go with the easy to use Glock ? It doesn't have a manual safety or decocking lever..... If there is even a remote chance it will be used for self defence it would be the semi-auto of choice for a first gun. Pick it up, pull the trigger and bang. Nothing to confuse you. As far as them being safe, look at what many cops carry. You can get a police turn in for around $300.00 in 9mm. As stated above, if you can go to the range and rent a few to try that would be the ticket. There are several semi-autos out there that are well made. I'm not a 9mm fan but thats just me. I like the 45ACP.
