Recoil Comparison
 

I have a Mossburg 835. When shooting the 3.5 inch mags (buckshot) the recoil is very heavy. I was just wondering if anyone can compare this felt recoil to a rifle caliber.

I have a .300wsm and it recoils far less than the Mossberg.

I haven't shot either of those but comparing my 870 with 3 inch shells to my .270, it seems that the shotgun is more of a push and the rife is more of a jab, if that makes sense...

I shot my 835 with just 3'' turkey load and thats the worst recoil I have ever had!! No rifle has compared so far

I had an 835 and shot several of 3.5" 00buck loads, pretty rough. I agree it's more of a push than a sharp recoil. It felt a little worse than my 35Whelenwithmaximum handloads,250gr bulletsand a wood stock. That was before I got the thumbhole stock and recoil pad.

.300 ultra mag is harsh but manageable. 835 w/ 3 1/2 has got it beat but not by much

Here's another table for comparing things. It uses a specific table created by a guy named Taylor....but you can load info in for things you know intimately, for instance your pet 30-06 load, and then put in a different round for comparison

I ahve a .300 Ultra Mag and an 835. I think that 3in slugs in the 835 kick worse then 3.5in Buckshot but not much. They are both very similar to my .300 Ultra Mag but a little less recoil from the 835.

dude, if u think thats bad. try shooting a 12 gauge 3inch REMINGTON SLUGGER RIFLED SLUGS out of a full choke without a recoil pad. thats wat i have 2 do until a few years.

I've also got the 835 & shoot the 2.75 high velocity slugs through the rifle barrel and the 3.5 turkey loads through the bird barrel - both leave bruises if you shoot more than a couple shots. I think this is probably true with about all pump shotguns though. Try planting your shoulder back against a tree when you fire a 3.5 turkey load, you learn real quick there's no place for the recoil to go except into your bones!

Tip: buy the limbsaver recoil pad for it - talk about night & day difference! I fully believe their claims on reduced recoil.

The 2 1/4 oz turkey loads out of my light weight 835 kick, in my opinion worse than anything I have ever shot, with the exception of a .460 Weatherby, a .458 Lott, and one rather lightweight .416. Nothing in the conventional catagory comes close, not even the ultra mags or the weatherbys. But, the recoil is much different in shotguns and in rifles, its sharper and quicker in rifles for some reason it seems, while shotguns seem to be more of a massive whallop...I suppose its the faster powder of shotguns that do it.
