as far as i know shooting sports require only Eye and ear protection. though sports like Cowboy action shooting strongly prefer that you wear cowboy type clothing

If you mean during the hunting of game? The only set regulations required are the required safety colors established by the various state game and/or federal game commissions. Usually this is the amount of and color of safety blaze orange that you wear. This is not optional, it is the law. Beyond that, the rest is up to you. And that rests on your comfort, ability to travel and protection from the elements. Some clubs may have even more restrictions than the game commissions but never less. And your options on what you wear are infinite. Just go to any sporting business and look around.

What Russ said ,and I would suggest wearing something orange in rifle season . Even though it isn't required it beats getting shot . We lost one hunter in our area this year because he was carrying his elk out and was shot by another hunter who only saw the elk horns and not the hunter carrying them .

Seriously, (like that's possible) if you're just out for a day at the range I'd say it's really a matter of comfort and practicality. I like to wear the lightest clothing possible for the weather without being uncomfortably cold (shivering is bad for accuracy). If you are recoil sensitive, shooting a real bruiser of a gun, or shooting a lot (the effect of recoil is cumulative, i.e. a gun that doesn't seem to kick very bad at first will leave you sore and flinching after a couple dozen/hundred rounds), you might consider a shooting vest with a built-in recoil pad.

If you are hunting then clothing selection is very important on a number of levels. You want to wear clothes that are suitable to the temps for the time you'll be hunting, with the consideration that while it may be very brisk in the morning, that jacket could be roasting your butt by midday. You also want to wear or pack rain gear, because it's guaranteed to rain if you don't have some. Clothing selection also depends on the hunting regs in your state and the type of game you're hunting. Speaking for Iowa, it is mandatory that you wear a certain amount of blaze orange during the deer gun seasons. There is no requirement to wear orange during upland bird hunting, but the DNR strongly recommends it (the pheasants don't seem to care). There is also no requirement to wear orange during the bow seasons or while turkey or waterfoul hunting, but it's a good idea to wear at least an orange hat when walking in the woods, especially if you're carrying a big ol' gobbler over your shoulder and like your head unleaded.

In my state for gun and muzzleloader deer hunting, 50% of the surface area of the clothing covering your upper body must be blaze orange. You can be fined for wearing blaze orange that is faded as the wardens have a color test to determine if the article of clothing in question is legal. If you wear a hat it must be Blaze orange also.
Wearing a ornage vest while upland bird hunting is not required but strongly suggested.

At the range I wear comfortable clothing. I don't wear tight jeans or anything that will bind or restrict movement. I often times wear a trap shooting vest in the summer to absorb recoil and have pockets to put all of my shooting accessories in. I always wear glasses and ear protection, as my hearing has deminished from years of trapshooting without hearing protection.

here in az there are no regs on blaze orange. but like halcon says there are people who get shot even carrying out their kill, i always carry a vest with me just to put on my kill (as i'm carrying it out) or if bullets fly my way.
