I recall hearing that a woman harvested a bull elk with a .25-06, I think I saw that in the HNI trophy room.

Many post's here on the 25-06. It is an amazing round. I have a rem sendero in that caliber, it is one of the most accurate rifle's I own. Everything I ever hit with it dropped immediatly, no tracking ever. Great round, will really reach out and do so accuratly. I have no experiance with the other caliber you mentioned.

With what you already have, the 25-06 would make the most sense. You are already set for deer, the 25-06 would be better for long shots at Varmits and as a back-up for deer. I am a big fan of the 6.5x55 but in your case, the varmit rifle would fit better.

If you want 6.5mm have you given any thought to .264 win mag?Performance leap from the 6.5x55. Could load itup with a Barnes TSX 120 or 130 gr bulletand have no problems taking blackies or calf moose.

The 2506 with 26" tube is a real gem as well. If you used a 115gr barnes or 120 partition it would also work for other then deer sized game. Though with what you have already doesn't seem like much of a concern!

6.5 x 55 with 85 gr sierra, 90 gr speer, or 95 gr hornady v-max for varmints. 120 gr nosler, 129 gr hornady, 140gr for larger game. I shoot 87 gr speers(no longer made) out of my 6.5 at about 3300 fps. 6.5 mm has more bullet choices ranging from 85 gr to 160 gr than the 25 cal (60-120)

UPDATE: I bought the 6.5x55 in a Tikka T3 Stainless/synthetic. After studying the ballistics and checking out the new Nosler Accubond 130 gr I decided it would make an ideal deer rifle and still allow me to blow up a few varmints and coyotes when called upon.

I think everyone here is smoking crack when you need a .25 or .26 for ground hogs or yotes.
Sheeeeeeesh.
You already have deer rifles, get a .223

Its not that I think I need that much power for varmints its that I only occasionally hunt them and here in Ontario you can't legally do it in most counties with anything bigger than a .275 rifle. I just want a deer rifle that can also double up on winter coyotes and the occasional ground hog hunt. You never have too many deer rifles.
