Rebarreling 98 Mauser

I have a Turkeys model 98 and am thinking of having it rebarreled. Have one done in 270 so don't need that caliber. All ready have the bolt bent and sporter stock and timney trigger on the gun. Need a caliber between 243 & 300 weatherby mag. Need help in deciding

Imho I would stay away from 300 wby magnum in a Turk. There are too many variations in the manufacture of turk 38's and from what I've read, on many rifles a few receiver threads have been bored out to accommodate the hand guard. This fact could make the strength of the receiver questionable for high pressure magnum rounds.

Isn't there something else different on the Turkish Mausers? I heard the threads were different or something.

Large ring receiver- small ring barrel threads. A barrel that would fit a standard mauser 98 would not fit a turk, but a barrel that would fit a swede 96 would.

Briman, that sounds correct. Another thing you may want to have your gunsmith check before you make you mind up for sure, is to check the receiver for hardness. If it is sufficiently hard enough to safely handle the .300 Wea. Mag, then got for it. If it is a little on the soft side, then you have a large choice of non-mag rounds to choose from.

Thanks guys. I'm leaning towards the 25-06. Have 243,7x57,7mm-08,2-270s & 300 weatherby, sort to want to fill a gap with out to much expense. Yes a gunsmith did tell me to go with unthreaded and unchambered bored barrel, if I went to the calibers such as 30-06 or that group. Is he right? Zeak

If you go with an unthreaded, unchambered, and pre-contoured barrel, then your gunsmith can exactly match the threads of your action and chamber to correct headspace. So he is correct.

Eyeballjr U can find a mauser at any gun show or almost any gun store that sells used weapons. I just bought myself a turkish mauser about an hour ago. I can't wait to use it.
