RE: 338 Federal

Not many have seen one yet but the reviews are very good. All NA game out to 300 yards will be in a world of hurt. Layne Simpson from Guns and Ammo took a nice elk at 314 yards with the 210 brain Barnes. Went clear through including the front shoulder. They report very reasonable recoil as well. I will have one soon.

Is it going to be better than a 8x57 loaded with 200 NP's???

I would like to have one, to compliment my 338-06.
I'm just hoping Browning picks it up, Idon't want to spend the money on a Sako that I may only take hunting once or twice a year.

I would say it advantage over the 8mm is that they will be new actions for the most part and probably a more uniform chamber fit and stuff. There are a lot of old military 8MM's out there. I think it will be a very good mid-range big game rifle. I also look for most all the manufactures to pick it up soon.

How are you wintering over there DM.

We didn't have a winter untill this month and now it's makeing up for lost time... I hate winter untill it gets here, and then i just accept it and wait untill it goes away!! hahahaa

I was at Cabella's today. I looked for 9.3x74R ammo, none there so i go for 9.3 NP bullets... nada! Not that big a deal as i'm not out, but i made up an "improved" 9.3x74R, chambered in a double rifle, and i wanted to start out with some factory ammo and go from there... I probable could have ordered some in Norma, but i don't like their brass, as it's too soft...

It's too cold to monkey around with all that right now anyway!!

Ruger lists the 338 Fed as being available in the Hawkeye series, and the Frontier Rifle. I am interested to see how this cartidge fairs. Hopefully it does well and it helps cure some of the "magnumitis" that gun buyers seem to be suffering from.

RE: 338 fedral

That's a sickness that I never contracted, thank God. My only magnum has .44 in front of it. As for the 338 fed I want one( I don't need one ), but I believe it should be a great medium, heavy game cartrige.

Load your .338-06 with a medium load, and you will have one...
