Default 06 as good as the 300winmag (or better)??

my recent guns and ammo magazione published some data in chart form on the bottom of page 66(for those of you that get the magazine).
It show the 30-06 with federal 165gr TB, and hornady 165gr SST out performing the the 300winmag's winchester 165gr FS.
now i think somebody going to have an opinion about this.
dont just look at 100 yards either look downrange. now that retention probably has to do with bullet design but... i havve to go to class soon but if there are requests i might post the data later

I would like to see the data. I think this may be a rare case where a factory load is not as hot as it should be. If you compare Winchester's ballistics for the 300WSM vs the 300 Win Mag, the 300WSM comes out ahead, but if you look at any other load data, the 300 Win Mag comes out ahead. I think it is a case of creative marketing on Winchester's part. They download the 300 Win Mag to make their new baby look better. Under normal circumstances using the same bullet weights, the 300 Win Mag tops the 30-06 by a goodly margin. I love both cartridges though and both will always have a place in my gun closet no matter what new whiz-bang superhyped magnum comes along.

On one of the "Blain and buckshot" threads on the Big Game forum, somebody listed penetration data from different calibers from tests conducted by (I think it was) Alaska Fish and Wildlife (?). In this test the rounds were fired at some sort of sawdust mixture and the .30-06 outperformed the 300 WM for penetration. And there were numerous other rounds ranked ahead of the 300WM, the two calibers really weren't even close in the rankings.

A slower moving bullet from a 30-06 should penetrate better than the same bullet fired from a faster 300 wm. A slower bullet expands less/more slowly and is able to penetrate deeply.

What the .30-06 light mags and High energy's do is move the .30-06 up to .300 winmag FACTORY levels. The comparison in guns and ammo was good for the 165gr trophybonded in .30-06 vs the Win failsafe 165gr in .300WM because they have nearly the same ballistic co-eff.
However the .30-06 165gr SST-LM has a MUCH better ballistic Co-eff. and comparing it to the Win failsafe 165gr .300 is not a fair comparison because Yes the .30-06 SST-LM round whips the .300WM failsafe's butt. If you compare the factory .300win 165 SST to the .30-06 165gr SST-LM then you see that although the .30-06 still beats it, it is not by very much.

ALso something else to consider, those Light magnum and High enery factory loads for the .30-06 are very VERY close to the upper limit of what the cartridge can handle IE you won't get much if any better hand loading, and the .300 win mag can be handloaded to damn near .300 weatherby performance. which the .30-06 will never do.

That being said I do love my .30-06, it's my favorite

the 06 as good or better than the 300 win mag?? Maybe...but it will never be faster...can't be done.
BullHunter stated the reason.....basic physics.

I can reload my 300wm to duplicate any 30/06 load yet I can't do vice versa for my 30/06.
The 30/06 is great but it doesn't perform at a 300wm level. Like some other posts have said, it's physics.
