best grain for accuracy
what is the best grain for long range shooting in 30-06

RE: best grain for accuracy
Impossible for anybody to tell you with certainity asthe only way is trail and error. Every rifle is different!
The 150gr bulletmaybe be the flatest due to MV it produces but in your rifle the 165gr bullet might prove more accurate. Therefor you would be better suited shooting the 165gr bullet and learning how to compensate for longer distance shots. You'll have to look at matching bullet/gr sizes to usage andtry them. |
RE: best grain for accuracy
Generally depending on the twist, most poeple get optimal accuracy with 165/168gr bullets out of a 30-06 or even 308. But depends on your twist mainly.

RE: best grain for accuracy
Generally speaking,
I would say you would get the most accuracy out of a bullet that isn't effected by wind drift that much. Therefore, maybe go for high ballistic coefficient and high velocity. Which ever grainage gives you the best balance of those go for that. |
RE: best grain for accuracy
ORIGINAL: .:SCOPE:EYE:. what is the best grain for long range shooting in 30-06 The 168-grain Sierra Matchking is used the most for competiton shooting out to 300 meters. Beyond that range, the 200-grain, 220-grain and 240-grain Matchkings take over. The 240 requires a twist faster than 1/10", however. However, if you are talking about hunting, a 190 or 200-grain spitzer boattail softpoint would be about the best you could choose, as it bucks wind better than anything lighter. I'm talking about 500 yards and beyond. Anything less than 400 yards is NOT long range...... |
RE: best grain for accuracy

ORIGINAL: .:SCOPE:EYE:. i plan to target shoot boattails....not soft points My standard long-range target load for the .30/'06 is the 200-grain Sierra Matchking bullet and 59 grains of H4831. It gives a muzzle velocity of just about 2700 FPS in a 26" barrel, and is very accurate at ranges of up to 600 meters, which is as far as I have tested it........ I buy bullets online, as few local shops carry the strange stuff I need! GRAF'S is about the cheapest, and THEY pay shipping!! http://www.grafs.com/fc/browse.php?o=3&p=928&q=&v=710&s=az SIERRA 30(.308)168gr HPBT BULLET MATCHKING 100/bx Item Number: SRA2200·Availability: In stock Add to Cart Price: $26.59 SIERRA 30(.308)200gr HPBT BULLET MATCHKING 100/bx Item Number: SRA2230·Availability: In stock Add to Cart Price: $30.59 |
RE: best grain for accuracy
For 500 meter silhouettes I used the 190 grain Hornad BTHP Match bullets. The extra weight was importand to knock the targets down. For accuracy only the 168 BTHP Hornady match was a bit more accurate in my rifle. I was however shooting a 308 not the 06.

RE: best grain for accuracy
It depends a lot on what your gun likes. The standard twist for the 30-06 is 1 in 10", but he Browning B78 and Husquvarna barrels are 1 in 12" twist. I have a B78 30-06 that can put 3 shots in 3" at 300yds using factory winchester 150gr ballisticsivertips. It's just a hunting rifle so I haven't tried it any further than that. I wouldn't say that's very good for long range "sniping", but plenty good for hunting. My wife has a custom 30-06 on a mauser 98 action that will put my handloads using 150gr B-Tips and 50.5gr of Ramshot TAC into one ragged hole at 100yds. Haven't tried it at longer range yet. Not sure what the twist is on this one either.
