Scoping my sniper rifle cheap!
 

I'm set up to get my M-24 (remington's civilian obtainable version) with the new year, but it's gonna blow my spending cash hoard. I'm looking for a scope that'll give me at least up to 16x, moisture proof, and good enough quality to last quite a while til I can afford a 9-25xleupold. I'm planning to hunt it at times, but mostly long range paper punching, hopefully pattern it everywhere out to at least 600 yrds (or as far as I can past that), so I'll need a clear image.

I don't want to suggest anything I have in mind, cuz I want an unbiased response.

I'm planning on being able to spend $150 give or take $50 before taxes, what's everyone's recommendations??

Screw the 10 ring, keep them in the zero!!!

Get a heavy barrel savage and use the money you save to get a better scope:).

Seriously though, go to snipercountry.com and look at the duty roster. These guys seem to think that for long range shooting rigs its better to skimp on the rifle than the scope.

My vote goes with Danewf, a rifle is only as good as the sights that are on it. And youre more likely to get a cheap rifle to shoot straight than you are to get a cheap scope to work good. Park the new rifle and save your money til you can get a good sight.

Well this may sound out of the ordinary, but its worth it to you to check it out I think. I shoot a LOT long distance and my scope of choice is the ATN 6-18x65LU Day/Evening Scope. (www.atncorp.com) For the money (350.00 new through an E-bay seller I know.....550.00 new from ATN's website) I dont think there is a better scope out there. Not from Leupold or Burris or anyone else. *ducking all the debris from the name brand fans* yes, I know it is a little more than the 150.00 to 200.00 you were talkin about, but like the other posts said....what good is a sniper rifle if you can't see/hit your target??!!

In my new catalog they had some good deals on burris, simmons & trashco <img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle> Another decent budget scope in my opion is the Swift. They have a lifetime warranty and very clear optics. E. Arthur Brown did have a sale last week on them, if you want to check them out.....

Simmos Aetec and Simmons Whitetail expedition. I had a Simmons 44 Mag on my 300 Win mag for 11 years and never any trouble it is now on a 270.

It is my understanding that Remington is only producing the M-24 under contract for the US Army. There are several things incoprperated into the M24 SWS that you will not and cannot get on a civilian equivalent rifle from Remington. Things like the 5R rifling, a long action for a .308 chambered rifle, a steel Badger Ordnance Tactical triggerguard/floorplate, H-S precision adjustable tactical stock, and the M-24 SWS trigger, mounts for the Redfield Palma match rear peep and International match front hood sights, etc. The closet thing to the M-24 SWS, that I know of the Remiongton offers, is the the 700 PPS police sniper rifle. But it is only available to law enforcement.

The USMC and the US Army are both using fixed 10x scope on the M40 and M24 versions of their respective sniper rifles. They get the job done out 1,000 meters.

I haved to agree with some of the others, if it were me, I would opt for a Savage model 10-FPLE2 tactical in .308 and take the extra $$$ that I saved, and buy the highest quality scope I could afford. I would not feel very comfortable at all with a $150 scope on such a rifle. But if you get the Savage, your options will be much greater in terms of a higher qulaity scope. If you are planning on hunting some with your new rifle, I would stick with the 4.5-14x or 4-16x scopes. This will give the extra light gathering of lower power and still plenty of high power for target work. The higher power scopes, become a problem when you start getting heat waves or mirage, and then you have to back off on the power anyway.

Leatherwood sopes are a good scope at an affordable price. Jim has been in the tactical scope making business since Vietnam and knows his stuff. Sightron also offers a very good quality scope and a reasonable price.
