Anyone have any experience with the Savage .17s?

As New Jersey considers .22 rimfire ammunition to be handgun ammo and I can't buy it until I'm 21, I'm considering getting an inexpensive .17 for plinking and target shooting. Does anyone have any experience with the Savage .17 models or alternately know any other inexpensive .17s I can find?

I have one and love it. I have the plain wood one with the heavy barrel. With a good scope they are very accurate.
The marlins are pretty close to the same gun, equal value and performance for the most part.
Savage does offer some nicer models if you want to spend the extra cash though, and now they have the Accu Trigger on the rimfires as well.

I just bought a the same Savage you have Paul but it has the accu-trigger. Cant wait to shoot it some. I am putting a Bushnell trophy scope that I had laying around on it. Cant wait to tear into some crows. The only thiung about the 17 hmr is they arent really cheap to shoot...but maybe it will get cheaper as more people shoot them.

[/align]I own one that has not spent more than 4 months at my house. My " friends" keep borrowing it. It shoots great [except in the wind]. The trigger is a little heavy but I have been told you can get an aftermarket trigger pretty reasonably. Use those Hornady rounds. Anything bigger than a squirrel , aim for the head.

I havea left handed onewith a heavy barrel and standard trigger. The trigger is good for me, but I know the accu-trigger is suppose to be better. I put a $50 scope on it and will shoot dime size groups at 25yds off a monopod. It will do better but I mainly just punch paper with it so I'm not to worried about it. Cost my about 250ish.

Thanks for the responses y'all. Hopefully the wind will eventually calm down enough for me to ride my bike to Gander Mtn and see if they have any Savages of this type in stock.
