300 win mag

How bad is the recoilthump from a 300 win mag?

RE: 300 win mag

It depend on the weight of the gun and how much recoil you can stand. I dont think its bad on any rifle ive shot so far but my little bro cant take it in a rifle anything lighter then 8.5 pounds.

RE: 300 win mag

Depends alot on stock design. Seriously, a 150gr load with 4350 powder is like a 180gr 06 IMR7828 load thump wise.

Now, I am loading 77gr of RL22 with 180gr bullet, and it start thumping pretty good. Not as bad as say a 3" mag slug thru a pump.

Now, I have had several RUM's. Thats where the thump gets to a point of being serious.

At the range siting in the scope will be a bit of a pounding. But once you have it sited and especially when you're hunting, you'll not notice the recoil shooting at big game. You'll be so focused on the animal, the recoil is the last thing that you think of. And if you hit an animal in the vitals and/or front shoulder, it's not likely you'll need a 2nd shot to keep the animal down. I like the .300 WM a lot!

Like mentioned weight, stock design and fit will play the biggest part in the recoil factor. All things being equal though the 300 wm is about the tops for most shooters, tolerable but certainly not tame. If you can handle shooting heavy 3006 loads you should manage a 8.5lb 300wm. It will be more but not by a huge margin unless you start pumping out 220 gr pills then she might make you take more notice. Installing a recoil reduction pad would be an option as well. They do work in terms of felt recoil.

I have one in a Ruger no 1 and its not much more than a 270win to me. I can fire atleast 40rounds off the bench before feeling the effects. I once bought a 300win in a remington 700 adl to this day it is the worst kicking rifle I have ever set behind. I sold it fast. Weight and stock design especially in magnum rifles.

I don't think it's all that bad. However if you are already event he slightly shy about recoil I'd avoid it. I would say that the 300WM is at the tops of I will tolerate for recoil. I can't see me ever getting a rifle that kicks harder. Or needing one.

why do you ask? are you thinking of getting one? my line of thinking is -and dont take this the wrong way - if you have to ask.......maybe you would be better served by a different caliber.

it's a considerable thump.. but it all depends on your threshold for pain and how much clothes you'll be wearing...

Mine's a Ruger 77 Mk II, and it doesn't bother me any more than a .30-06. I was surprised it wasn't worse. Even my Ruger 77 .338WM isn't bad.

Both are much better than a Rem 870 shooting slugs from the bench. An 870 will really hurt me after awhile, neither of the Rugers ever have.

I find it recoil very manageable for me. Of course I did put on a Sims slip-on recoil pad prior to ever shooting mine. I definitely agree that shooting 3" slugsthrough something like an 870 express with the shorty slug barrel, will give you a kick quite a bit stronger than the .300 win mag.

I have a Browning A-bolt in 300 win mag, and the recoil is less than some 30-06s I've shot. It all depends on the gun's design and the way it fits you.

I spend a lot of time on the range and I find the people that are usually talking about all the recoil of a 300 win are not people that own one . If you have it in your mind it's going to kick your probable better off getting a smaller caliber .

My cousin picked one up last year and I can see him cringe after about 10 shots at the bench, and he's a BIG guy that's supposedly grown up shooting large calibers and shotguns. However, I tried it in the off-hand and I could shoot it all day with no problems. But if it's any worse then shooting my 7 Mag at the bench with hot loads, I don't want any part of them.

If you know someone who has the rifle in .300 WM you're considering, see if you can shoot a few rounds with theirs.
Otherwise, I don't think it's much different that shooting a 12 guage with 3" slugs.
Any once you have it sighted in, you'll not notice the recoil hunting, I'm 100% sure of that. Get a good rest, solid cheek anchor on the stock and good steady squeeze and you'll be happy with the results.

If you are a heart patient, take rat poison, have stintsold, weak and decrepid like me, install a muzzlebreak and have fun. Regards, Rick.

If you are a little recoil sensitivie, the secret to owning a .300 Win Mag is the Caldwell Lead Sled. Yes, it does have about 50% more recoil than a 30/06. You do all your load development and sighting in with the Lead Sled - practice with a softer recoiling gun. You will never feel the recoil of the .300 Win Mag when hunting.

Stay away from muzzle breaks. It will put you into Belltone land.

RE: 300 win mag

That's a good suggestion Roskoe. It helps you get the hard part out of the way with out too much trouble. I think it's still one of top picks for people who's jobs involve highly accurate rifle shooting at distance, too. It's a very good choice for larger game.

RE: 300 win mag

To compare, in rifles of the same weight, the 30-06 has 17.5 lb of recoil. The 300 Win Mag has 25.6 lbs. So maybe about a third more.

I have had both in the 700 Remington. The 300 sure as heck has more recoil.
