Is Cabelas slipping?
I have tried to find cleaning supplies for shooting twice in the last year, and cabelas is very weak these days. Bass Pro is a joke. I have had to place my order with midsouth supply or midwayusa or grafs.
Cabelas use to have everything and the kitchen sink. They seem more interested in selling clothes and shoes these days. I just ordered a gun vise, and wanted the tipton model. They used to stock it, but now have the "cabelas brand". I also ordered a small tipton 12" cleaning rod. They don't stock this anymore. I also ordered some plated jags, can't find em at cabelas anymore. I like pro-shot cleaning patches, again not at cabelas. I just ordered a scope from swfa optics, cabelas can't touch thier price. Whats going on over there? It used to be my one stop shopping center. Any of you guys find the same? |

did u check cabelas on line?....i noticed there catalogs , are not as good as they used to be...online i can find everything, catalog, like u said..clothing and houseware

RE: Is Cabelas slipping?
I've had a few bad experiences with Cabela's and ordering online. It seems it takes them about 4 days to realize I ordered something from them, then another 2 days to pull it an box it, and then another 2 days to ship it to me. In the meantime I could have placed 3 orders in consecutive days to Midway and had them all, for less shipping, and less overall price.
I did, however, order my EOTech from Cabelas and had them over nite it, hoping to get it in time, and sure enuf it showed up in 2 days I think. Then again it cost me $45.....Good thing I had gift certificates! |

RE: Is Cabelas slipping?
I usually use Midway for pretty much everything. But we did just buy a shooting rest from Cabelas and recieved it pretty quick. I think Midway has better people, prices, and service.

What sucks about midway is huge shipping costs. Used to be free. Oh remember the good ole days.

RE: Is Cabelas slipping?
There is a Cabelas 3 miles from my house. I almost never buy anything there as there is a SPortsmans Warehouse nearby too (5 miles away). Cabela's is way overpriced IMHO, but its fun to window shop there. The really nice thing about Cabrlas thoughis that they stock a lot of ammo in obscure cartridges.
MidwayUSA- my problem is with shipping costs too. I get a Dealer discount from them, but my minimum order, IIRC, is $60. The dealer discount isn't as significant now as it was about 2 years ago either. I like dealing with Midsouth Shooters supply- I can often times by things cheaper there than I can at Midway, even with a dealer discount at midway. |

Uh, I guess I never noticed, or since my Dad usually puts in the order, just never told me, hell I don't know what I was thinking.:)

RE: Is Cabelas slipping?
I go to their stores for 90 percent of the stuff I get at Cabelas. I think Cabelas and Scheels and Brass Pro are loading up with cheap junk from China to try to be as bad a Walmart. In that area however, they have a long way to go.;)
|
RE: Is Cabelas slipping?
I order most of my stuff from Midsouth. Courteous, knowlegeable people to deal with. They tell you Ups in about 5 days, and I usually have it in 3.
I will have to give Midway a pat on the back. I recently ordered a FAT Wrench from them and was told "out of stock"...probably in Feb. It just arrived on Mon. Surprise, surprise!! |
RE: Is Cabelas slipping?
I think Cabelas is becoming too "big." Their name is just getting people to buy. People think "CABELAS," and shop there just because. Unfortunately, I live in the middle of nowhere, and am forced to order a lot and have stuff shipped to me. Cabelas seems to be about the only place that I can order fishing gear, stuff for my muzzleloader, and clothes at a decent price. I hate going to Walmart (which is 110 miles away anyway), so I just stick with Cabelas for the most part.
Reloading stuff I can get locally, or when I make the 110 mile trip north, but I still steer clear of Walmart if possible. Later, Marcial |

RE: Is Cabelas slipping?
Cabela's is my #1 all time favorite store. I can find absolutely nothing wrong with them other than some high prices and a few bad employees.
Personally,I would rather shop there, where people know their stuff, than at a place where you know more than the "gun expert". They have very reasonable prices if you ask me and combined with the expertise and atmosphere, are the best outdoor store. I have never not found what I was looking for there. Sometimes stuff is out of stock, but they do their best to get it for you. That's my two cents. |
RE: Is Cabelas slipping?
Last time I went to the store in Dundee, Mich I noticed what seemed to me to be a slip in morale. It wasn't just one employee either and it wasn't at Christmas. Anyone from Cabelas reading all thissssssssssss? You should beeeeeeeeeeeee!!

RE: Is Cabelas slipping?
I like all the Hot chicks in hunting apparel that work at Cabelas. :)That is about the only reason I go to Cabelas anymore. With the price of gas, I can order all my stuff I need online and have it shipped for alot less than I could drive the 115 miles to Cabelas.

RE: Is Cabelas slipping?
Problem is that Cabela's and Bass Pro are not "gun shops", or "bow shops". They can cater to the casual sportsmen. While they often have what we need, they sometimes as often don't. Being corporate, its damn near impossible to get anything special ordered if they company doesn't carry it. Small gun shops can just break out Pape's, Ellett, or Henry and have it to you directly.
Clothes are where the $$$ is in retail. Ever notice the way a bass pro store is set up? In order to get anywhere....you have to go through clothes, socks, t-shirts or something with a high mark up. It ain't just a coincidence. I know with Bass Pro, and likely too with Cabela's, that their house brand isn't acctually made by BPS or Cabela's; but rather is made by a usually decent company and then has the BPS logo slapped on it, and is sold at a lower price point. Take the BPS/Redhead safes...yep...made by Browning...sell for a couple of hundred $ less. The Redhead bows....up until this past year they were made by Hoyt...now, they are basically Parker Frontiers...selling for $200 less than the name brand. |

i fixed this by going online, getting the catalog number and then ordering over the phone. |

RE: Is Cabelas slipping?
Its just there are alot of speicalized orders I used to be able to get, but can't now. For instance, I wanted a silver elite 3200. You can't get it a cabelas. I wanted a silver set of warne rings. Not at cabelas. I want a decent pistol cleaning rod. Not at cabelas. I wanted some competition redding bullet seaters. Def. not cabelas.
Many more, just all I can think of right now. I know what I am going to do. I am going to get rid of my cabelas visa. I am going to get a discover card. That way, I can get cash back just like cabelas. But this cash, I can use somewhere else. |
RE: Is Cabelas slipping?
Anything I order from cabelas I usually have it within 4 days of placing my order. They have the best customer service also.

RE: Is Cabelas slipping?
I was at Cabelas Dundee a couple of weeks back... hadn't been there in a year... it was crowded... merchandise quality has eroded over the past decade and it is all overpriced.... i used to order online and shop them quite a bit now i don't hardly bother unless i have points on my Cabelas Visa to spend.... I generally shop Midway or Brownells, etc because they give me a very good dealer discount with my 003 FFL...so much so that it pays for the 30 bucks / 3 years license many many many times over....
i basically quit "shopping" at Cabelas over the purchase of my S&W 686... they had competative prices with the other dealers in the area but had a few guns in stock... so i picked an early december 2005 day while i was at my parents to go pick it out... but i had to stand in line for an hour and a half just to get to speak to someone at the gun counter and then everythign eroded quickly when i asked them how many they had... to which they replied 5... and i asked them to get all of them out so i could inspect each one before i bought... they did but the attitude was quite lackluster... not to mention it is ridiculous as a customer ready to buy... to have to stand in a line for that long while people kick tires... needless to say it'll be the last firearm i buy from them... even if i have to order it elsewhere... |
RE: Is Cabelas slipping?
I don't order from ANYONE ANYMORE that charges shipping based on the COST of the item you order, instead of what it coststo ship it to you! That's just plain crooked!

What about the next guy that decides that he wants one "new in the box".. and it has turn marks and your grubby fingerprints all over it? If you order a gun.. do you get to pick which one you get? NO.. you get whatever they get in for you. |
RE: Is Cabelas slipping?
I find Cabelas to be a good source for much, not all, of the stuff I desire.
One thing is for sure, just like LL Bean and Leupold, I find that Cabelas stands behind every single purchase. They have always replaced anything, no questions asked, if I had the slightest complaint or problem. |

One weekend I had to buy powder - 1 lb RL22, and at Cabela's thought it a bit high at $26. I bought some before at Sportsmans Warehouse and thought it was cheaper, but not sure the amount. Next time I was at Sportsmans Warehouse, they gave me a card showing it at $17.50, a full $8.50 less than Cabelas. Next time at Cablea's I mentioned it and they matched it and gave me a refund. Cabelas... nice store and fun to go to. Overpriced though, and from the price on the powder almost borders gouging. The fudge is good too, but that is overpriced as well. I think that Cabela's clientele is more uppity. Guy in there once buying a SAKO rifle for "defense", and asking the clerk what the 30 in 30-06 stood for, and was wondering why the 30 is smaller than the 45, yet the shells are much bigger? LOL At Sportsmans Warehouse, they would say here is a 357... |
