RE: m1 carbine for deer
First off check and see if its legal to use an M-1 Carbine for deer in your area. Ive used a M-1 carbinea little for deer but its not exactly the best caliber, i found it lacking, but it will work. If you have another more powerful rifle use it insted but if all you have is an M-1 goat it just make good shot placement (lungs/Head) and use commercial soft-point ammo.

RE: m1 carbine for deer
Bad! Bad thinking! The M1 carbine uses a pistol cartridge, and is less effective than even the .357 Magnum. While it will kill a deer, (just as will the .22 long rifle), it is certainly not up to the job as a routine matter.
IF you insist on trying this, use a good softpoint bullet load, and get up CLOSE - 40 yards or LESS, and place your shot in a vital area, avoiding all heavy bones! |
RE: m1 carbine for deer
techniqualy the M-1 round is not a pistol cartridge as it was designed for the carbine. And at is effective on whitetails out to about 100 yards at the very most, id say 50 yards would be a realistic distance for a lung shot.

And to think, some of us think that the .22's are bad! I agree with El!

We could discuss wheather the .30 carbine is a rifle or pistol round till the cows came home but thats neither here nor there. As you said its not a very impressive round but it does work... I dont doubt your displeasment using the round on jack rabbits because the round generaly dosent expand very quickly and it would have just punched a hole through the jack' without deposting much energy into it. And as for the 32-20 an oldtimer near me used one for years on deer and it works too, you just have to know their limitations.

Ask any Old Marine who used the US Carbine in battle and see what they have to say about them!

RE: m1 carbine for deer
I wouldn't use one on deer.

RE: m1 carbine for deer
They are not legal in our state for deer hunting. They don't come close to the minimum ME.
