Wildcatting a SAUM or WSM
 

Just kinda a curious question, what do you think of a guy wildcatting the neck of a SAUM or WSM down to a 22 cal bullet? I bet it'd be a hell of a varmint/paper punching round. Even if a guy took it down only to a 6.5mm bullet, one of those unholy long swedish bullets, I bet you'd get twice the accuracy of the 7mm just because the bullet is lighter and more stable, and you'd probably get better results on game because of the better sectional density of the 6.5mm bullets.

ANy thoughts??

My thoughts are it is a waste of time period. Think about the .22 for a second. There is only so much powder that you can burn for a given bore diameter before you are either wasting powder, over pressuring the chamber or burning the throat. As far as the 6.5mm being more accurate than a 7mm bullet, nope. Theory is often times foiled by facts.

at 22cal you will burn the barrel out in no time. and by now time im talking most likely less than 100 shots, even if you let it cool properly.

the 243/223 from Winchester will be winchester super short magnums. like the other short magnums, a solution to a problem that does not exsist and an answer to a question unasked. all the short magnums offer over a magnum is ease of reloading since they are not belted. performance gain a 100fps, is no great gain, nor is the "improved" accuracy.

Huh, I wasn't aware of the .223 and .243 WSM's coming out soon, when are they expected?

Actually the WSSMs are as yet a rumor are probably a hoax. If they do come out barrels will be melting everywhere.

as reported in the january issue of G&A seems as though they might exist, though ballistics sound promising for the people who like amll bullets fast. claims of 200fps faster than a 22-250. though even if those are a little tweaked a 100fps faster is a improvemnt if you like that sort of thing. hopefully G&A put a call into winchester before running the blurb
