243 for jackrabbit

Well, I had the day off today and figured that I would head out to look for a few jacks. Remembering the last time I took rabbits with a 12 guage auto and how it tore the rabbits up I thought I'd take my little NEF 243 out to see if I can hit some. WOW! If you hit them in the head, it is great. Dont hit them in the center of thier body, it can do a number on them! Works well and helped me to sharpen up on my rifle shoting on big game. They run out about a hundred yards and stop just for a second or two to see what jst scared them, thats your opportunity. EJ

Sorry I forego the head shot and make coyote food with a body shot...love the sound of WHOOP! Still great practice for trigger control.

I'm not into gruesome either.Just sometimes the safe shot at some distances happens to be center mass.We have a excess of them out here right now and I ride or did ride motorcycles till I had a run in with larger widlife(feral hog)!I do and attempt to head shoot rabbits if possible.I took two bucks this year both with shots to base of skull. The jacks carry fleas and other parasites so just any solid shot is satisfying.I have a vengence for hogs thats worse than rabbits after one sending me "crappie flopping" down the road at 70 mph!Game such as deer I have the greatest respect for...we have a good population of mule deer that I watch for on the road and give right of way to! Prarie dogs aren't real high on my "want to snuggle" list either. But I do try to dispatch them quickly.

I aint gettin on your case for shootin jacks and not eating them, but I dont want new or potential hunters to get the wrong idea that hunter kill anyhting for the hell of it. If you kill a jack here and leave it you could be fined since they are a game animal. I dont hunt them until after a couple of hard freezes anyway. The ones I got monday didnt have fleas, but the ones from a few months ago shure did. EJ

Try a 55 grain Nosler BST at 4,000 fps.

.243 works nicely on jackrabbits. These were from my son's first hunt.

Dang, you can only upload one per post...

These were taken using Remington Express 100 Gr. PSP Core-Lokt's.

Oh no I didn't feel you were getting on me.Texas doesn't consider them game animals and I don't think our jack rabbits would be worth eating on their best day, they are varmint.I will pass on cotton tails with hopes of a good freeze followed by snow, then I eat rabbit! I love pheasant hunting after a good snow...every brush pile has a bird or cotton tail and they are fed on corn or wheat. Now thats good hunting and eating!
