I assume that the game of the day is deer?

And yes, lending to the fact that rifles are likely verbotten in your neck of the woods, I would pick a smokepole over a shotgun. More range, more energy, yah yah yah.

I live in Ohio, and I'd say that the number of hunters now using smokepoles instead of shotguns is approaching 1 out of 4.

Ten years ago, you'd never see a guy with a muzzleloader during gun season...now it's common. More range and better accuracy.

If I had to choose between a shotgun and muzzle loader I would choose the muzzle loader for the same reasons SwampCollie said.

If he shoots the ML better than by all means use it. The only thing you are gaining with a shotgun is ease of use. They are easier to get a second shot off and not such a pain to clean after the hunt.

Other wise they both have good performance on deer around 100 yards or so. And if he is shooting rifled slugs or cheaper all lead sabots then the muzzle loader is using better designed bullets as well.
