I have never owned or shot one, but did give a look at a mossberg bolt action slug gun about 5 years ago. I think that they can be pretty accurate, but really only a single purpose shotgun compared to something like a 870 express supermag combo with 2 barrels. I ended up buying the 870 after looking at the mossberg.

I used to have an old Mossberg bolt action 20ga smooth bore. It was only good for hunting tree rats. Anything else, like birds, it was basically a single shot. You couldn't cycle the bolt fast enough for a follow up shot.

And now I have a Mossberg 695 12ga fully rifled slug gun. It shoots pretty good, but has a horrible, 9 pound, trigger pull.[:'(]

I think the object is to "hit" the bird so you don't need the follow up shot.

I bet you if you only had one shot, you wouldSOON become a better bird shot!

DM has it right. I have a Mossberg bolt action 410. When you're given 2 shells and told to bring home something for the pot, you learn very quickly to shoot carefully, or go to bed hungry. That's hunting.

You know, you can stop by the grocery store instead of going hungry.

Yes of course, Red Lion, how stupid of me. I'll pass your wisdom on to all of those who lived through the depression. They should have spoken to you first.

I shot a 20 gauge bolt action shotgun and i dont feel it shoots any better then my Mossberg 12 gauge pump. Also i have faster follow up shots for when there are multiple animals in the area and the option of havingas many barrels as you want. I have 4, A 24in rifled barrel with a scope, a 24in rifles barrel with iron sights, a 28in smooth bore barrel, and a 22in turkey barrel( i have two of the same model shotguns).

MYMARLIN 512....HAS SHOT MANY DEER FOR BOTHI AND MY FATHER. INFACT IT IS MY MOST ACCURATE SHOTGUN AT THE RANGE BESIDES MY REMINGTON 870 (THEY ARE VERY CLOSE) BUT I STILL THINK THE 512 TAKES THE CAKEOUT PAST 125-130YDS (WHEN IT IS LOADED WITH PARTITION GOLDS.) ITS ACCURACY IS INCREDIBLE AND ALSO SELLS AT A FAIR PRICE. I MUST SAY THAT OUT OF 27 SHOTGUNS AND EVEN OUT OF MOST OF MY RIFLES (ABOUT ANOTHER 22),IT IS MY NUMBER 1 FOR ACCURACY (BESIDES SOME OF MY RIFLES)BUTI FIND ITQUITE HEAVY TO CARRY EVERYWHERE IN THE WOODS.I LIKE MY 870 THE BEST FOR HUNTING AND COMFORT OF SHOOTING IN GENERAL. BUT IF BOLT ACTIONS ARE YOUR THING, THE 512 IS EXTREMELY ACCURATE AND WON'T BREAK YOUR BANK EITHER.
