WD 40as gun oil?
 

Can I use WD instead of a gun oil ? I use it to wipe the outsides down after they have gotten wet and was wondering if I could use it after cleaning the bore/action?

It is great after hunting as a water displacent (WD), but too thin for me as a "gun oil".

After I WD I wipe my guns off with a clean cotton towel and for years now only use a dry lubricant. Especially important with carry weapons as the dry film does not "magnetically" hold lint and fibers like oil lubes do.

sure you......can..... use it.but i wouldnt....do yourself a favor and spend the 2 dollars on a real gun oil....your guns will thank you for it.

WD 40 should never be used as a gun oil, as it gums up way to much, and can really cause a problem if left to drip into the action.

It will work really well for cleaning and inhibiting rust, but the downsides outweigh the positives. Its false economy to save a few dollars instead of using something made for guns. If you insist on being cheap, use Mobil-1 synthetic oil- but then again a quart of this stuff will cost as much as a can of Sheath, CLP, or RemOil anyhow.

It wasn't about the cost, just curious. I use mobil1 in most of my engines, but I think I'll continue to use regular ole gunoil in the guns..LOL

I say NO to WD 40 or other ad hoc lubricants for firearms. WD 40 will turn gummy in firearms after a few rounds are shot through it. It would be better to completed clean and put very little gun oil on inner workings of shotgun or rifle than to put WD 40 or other lub not specifically made for firearms. I also stopped using gun lub that has teflon in it, because it'll make the action of a shotgun or rifle very stiff in cold weather 20 F or less.

Well here's a different side to using WD 40 as a gun oil. If your using a semi auto in the blowing snow it is one of the few that won't freeze your action. Heavy gun oil in super cold conditions is not the way to go. I've seen it happen many times.

WD 40 gums up after firing 100% Myth. In fact at outside ranges where dust is a problem it lessen's the gum up problem that heavy oils will produce. You burn WD 40 out of the barrel on the first shot. And you don't want oil to stay in the barrel for very long after your shooting. Try this oil your rifle's barrel then put it back on the sand bag, your next shot will not hit zero. Until you burn out that oil it acts like a molycoat and will not zero the same as a fouled barrel.

The reason why you don't see WD 40 at the gun range is people have this image that it is a sin to use it on a gun. I say after using it forever they need toget over that. There are some pretty good thin silicon sprays out there that work just as well. The onlything you need heavy gun oil in is rapid fire semi auto's wherethe moving parts get hotterfaster.

WD 40 is theonly oilI will use on my working guns.And it has nothing to do with prices.Storing a gun is a whole different story.

Does anybody use "KROIL OIL" .Myself I think it is some pretty good stuff.

i gaveup on WD 40 after i found some rust on guns thathad been stored for awhile. Have used MILITEC for many years and it works so much better.

if you WANT your guns to rust then use that trash, i won't use it for anything.it dries up fast and doesn't protect at all. get some lucas gun oil.

I would trust WD-40 to keep my guns from rusting more than most of the commercial gun oils out there.
RemOil is crap. CLP is marginally better than the RemOil. Outers and Hoppes not much better. About the only thing that works close to as well as WD-40 is Birchwood Casey Sheath.

I personally tested this for myself, I took a bunch of iron nails, pounded thm 1/4" into a 2x4, coated each nail with a different oil/protectant + I threw in Lee Liquid Alox as well, since I lube bullets with the stuff.
For protection, I found that:
RIG>WD-40>Sheath>Hoppes=Outers>CLP>RemOil. After sitting out in the rain overnight and then placed in the garage, Remoil showed rust after the first day, CLP on the second day, Outers and hoppes after about a week, Sheath and WD-40 kept rust away for over a month, and RIG didn't rust.

I now know why I couldn't keep my Rem 597 from rusting- a garbage rifle with a garbage coating with a garbage protectant- the thing would rust justsitting in the gun cabinet for a week[:'(]

The WD-40 collects dust and belly button lint like a magnet however. Keep it out of the trigger/safety mechanism.
