.22 or.17

Looking for a fun shooting , ACCURATE lil rifle to take squirells, plink and perhaps shoot in a local league with. I am a noob when it comes to the small cal. guns, what brands/ styles should I be looking at? All opinions are very much appreciated.

I ahve 2 marlin rimfires. A model 882 in .22Mag and a 917V in .17 HMR. Both are accurate. I dont know how accurate you are looking for but the .22 Mag stays right around 3/4in and 100 yards and the .17 HMR stays right at 1/2in. I just got the .17 HMR but i never had a problem with the .22 Mag in the year ive had it. It prob has 5,000 rounds through it and i never had a misfire. I always used the Winchester Supreme ammo in it and only clean the barrel every 400 to 500 rounds (sometimes more). I would recomend a Marlin anyday but i know there are other brands that are as good if not better but for right around $200 its a great gun. As for if you shoudl get .17 or.22 thats more of what you want to do with the gun.

Thanks for the reply retaks, I was looking at a Marlin yesterday at Gander. I have a 30/30 Marlin as well as a Winchester but my Remington bolt is my fave rifle for deer. I would like to be able to place a killing head shot at 75-100 yds on a yote if that opportunity presents itself while I'm squirreling.

I wouldnt recomend using a rimfire for Coyote but either of the Magnum Rimfires are capible of that. I would be more comfortable with the .22 Mag but its more your preference. If you want more accuracy the the .17 HMR is what you want. If you dont mind sacraficing a little accurace then the .22 Mag would prob be better.

the .22, .22 mag, and .17HMR are all great, but if you're looking for something that you can take squirrels cleanly with and take the occasional coyote with at 75 to 100 yds then i would suggest the .17. I used my henry .17 for squirrels and ground hogs. Its pretty flat at 100yds. I personally prefer it for squirrels over my .22 mag because it makes alittle less of a mess out of them. I was at Gander Mountain the other day and saw .17HMRs for around $200. I think savage and marlin make bolt actions if memory serves. A note of caution though, if you are looking for just a plinking and squirrel gun i suggestion the .22 LR. They're cheaper and in my opinion a better squirrel cartridge than the other two.

The marlin 17 hmr's are very accurate and I am very pleased with mine, although the trigger could be better.

I think you will be very satisfied with a .22lr because of ammo price.
The more you can afford to practice, the better marksman you will be.

Thanks to all for the replys.
Should I be looking at semi auto or bolt action in your opinions?
IH83,
Why do you feel the .22 is a better squirrel round? Is the .17 no good for plinking in your opinion because of the ammo cost or something else?

For me the 17 HMR is a great round for plinking except I just hate cleaning a .17 barrel. I much prefer a .22 barrel when it comes time for cleaning...
