300 WSM for deer or any hunting?
Anyone have one of these and use it for deer hunting? It seems like overkill but I might be able to get a good deal on one.
Anyone have any input here. Also would be going on a elk hunt sometime in the future it would work great for that I think. Just want some opinions here. |
RE: 300 WSM for deer or any hunting?
If you can get a good deal on one and have aspirations of Elk hunting in the future, then go for it. It is a good caliber. It may be a little more than you "need" for deer, but who cares. I shot a nice doe with my .300 win mag last year with 165 fail safe and she dropped 10 feet from impact. It did wreck an entire shoulder though. Good luck.

You don't need a .300 mag for any deer but if can shoot it well and its a bargain then its also one of the most versatile and capable rounds on the market.

More than you really need for deer but they won't know the difference.

my research shows that the 300wsm is just as good as the 30-06 and has less bullet drop with the same weight bullet over the same range. Was gonna buy me a 30-06 until i dug a little deeper into the research. Corse 30-06 ammo is easier to find in a pinch -v- the 300wsm |

It will work just fine as long as you can handle the gun. In reality the 3006 is more then you need for deer but you don't see to many say that do you??? Just don't get caught up in the faster is better thing unless you need it, as many do. By thisI mean if your going to be hunting deer where 100 or underyard shot is normal and 200 yard is on the long side of things no need to load up 150 gr bullets or rapid expansion bullets. This is where many make mistakes, then they blame the chambering or the bullet. Match your situation with the proper bullet and go hunt deer. If its time to tackle something bigger again match the bullet to the application and go hunting. Thats the beauty of owning a cartridge that is multi purpose;)!

RE: 300 WSM for deer or any hunting?
I have two guns in 300 WSM and am quite fond of the caliber. I have killed deer in east Texas and Oklahoma with them, and it might be a little too much for east Texas size deer. People will say that there is no such thing as overkill and that is probably right, but there is definitely more than needed. I am all about good deals, so I would say buy it.

Go ahead and get you some !! It will make great rifle for along time. I shoot a .300wm for whitetail and I just dont see that it does anymore damage to the deer then my .270wsm .

I would get it! It's a great all-around caliber! Get it and you can take anything in NA with it. Definately don't worry about who said what about over kill. It's a gun like anyother, just a juiced up 30-06. It'll be fine.

Thanks again!! |

Good for you. I just bought one, haven't had a chance to try it out yet though. Can't wait, seems like it should do the job for anything I need.
BTW, first post, glad to be here. |
RE: 300 WSM for deer or any hunting?
It's the best centerfire gun/caliber in my safe. I pack around 10-12 guns in there & that's the last one I would part with if I was in a financial hole real bad.
The only negative with WSM's is the price of cartridges. I buy the least expensive ones... ie... Winchester or Federal. |

Buckmaster68-
Ihave one and love it! Sold my .35 Whelen and .270 Winand purchased the .300WSM. It's extremely accurate, recoil is very tolerable and has all the options of .308 cal. bullets!!! 125 grains to 220 if you want. If you load as I do, you can do alot with the .300WSM. I bought itbecuase I wanted onerifle that I could hunt all over with. Deer anywhere ( specially those large saskatchawan/alberta ones!), elk, moose and bear. Comfortable enough to take up a mountain for sheep/goat and can kill one from a long way off. The animal of a lifetime shows up at 425 yards on the last day and the last thing I want to worry about is my rifle's ability to make the shot/kill at that distance. I only want to worry about my skills, not the rifle's! Enjoy the cartridge and good luck with it!!! |
