RE: Hey stubblejumper ( re: ballistic tips)

Otis, Congrats on your Bou hunt...sounds great. I am a lover of this bullet as well for deer. I have heard all the trash talk about it is no good in tight and blows up on deer. If you aim for vitals it will drag down game like no other. I shot a large bodied whitetail at 125 yards(7 mm Rem Mag), took out both lungs(jello) and top of the heart before darn near plucking the left shoulder clear off....and yes it did exit through the left shoulder. Guess how many yards I had to track the deer......0. Good thing it was in deep and thick and as it was it I had cape and quarter the bruiser to get him to my truck parked a mile away.

As far as moose, as much as I love BT's i don't think so. They are great thin skin or deer bullet. Well unless you have an 300 or 300RUM then maybe BT would be considered.

Speaking of larger game bullets and the 7MM Rem Mag. Next year I will be going for Elk, being i never have used the 7mm for anything but deer yet. Anybody have bullet style they would recommend for a bull elk hunt? It will be call, past experience has proved 300 yards shots to right in tight. My gun doesn't really like Nosler Parts, so i am looking for possible other styles to try. (Over the counter, but I may get into reloading this winter)

Otis sorry to hone in on your post.

I used a 140 ballistic tip out of a 270 to take a bull elk at 20 yards. Same results as you skeeter, entrance and exit wound with jello in the middle. I wouldn't reccomend them for elk and moose though. I now use the failsafe or TBBC. I would look at Federal they load the BT, NP, TBBC, Sierra game king, and Barnes XLC or Winchester with the failsafe or power point. I took a large cow this year with a .270 140gr TBBC and it was the best looking mushroom I ever saw. It enterd the back of the ribs breaking three, turned the liver into mush, caught the left lung and broke two ribs on the other side and stopped under the skin. She went maybe 60 yards.

Otis:

Congratulations!!

Skeeter 7mm:

Go with a 175 gr. Barnes X, Trophy Bonded Bear Claw, Swift A-Frame, or Win. Fail Safe. Good luck.

Thanks guys, I was planning on giving the Barnes X and maybe some others a try for the Elk hunt. I have never been a real fan of NP's, so was wanting an alternative.

Otis, my buddy and I want to go on a Bou hunt. I live in Saskatchewan and would like to hear more about where, costs, etc. How long in advance did you book? Any info you have & would like to share would be great.

Thanks Otis for the info. We won't be going next year anyway. As both my buddy and I will be drawn for Trophy Mulie's (only comes every 4-5 years) and going on the Elk hunt. But possibly 04' we are thinking of an out of province hunt for either Bou or with a buddy in Alta for sheep.

Pics, you bet, you cam email to [email protected].

Tell me, is the whitetail hunting as good as they say out there?

Well that depends what do they say?

But yes our whitetail hunting is superb. Lots of land, lots of deer, trophies are always a good possiblity and low hunter pressure (only about 50,000 tags sold a year here...with a buck success rate of 75% and a total success rate for guns in the 80% overall) Our deer are both big bodied and head gear as well. Good food source, management and mild winters have left the herd in great shape the past 5 years. Hey we have more deer than people living here..is that good or bad? Many misconception that B&C walk down main street, tied up on trees or seen on a daily basis. Another is this land is all flat and bald...big misconception. It is loaded with bush, about half the province is forest, fringe and shield...the rest is farm and grassland. We have bush, rolling hills, coulees, valleys, rivers, etc...it is great deer habitat and has good food sources which is why the big bodies and antlers. Bag limit is only one deer either sex and in some northern zones an additional doe tag is available. The season run Sept-Dec 7 - bow, Sept 30-Nov 2 -ML, Northern Zones Nov 4 - Dec 7 & Southern Zones Nov.18 - Dec 7 for rifle(whitetail deer)...so liberal hunting season.

So what do you think, good or all hype?

Otis, if you like deer hunting...you'd love sask. I know many who come here on a yearly basis from BC and east. One group comes yearly from New brunswick for 1 week. Tags have gone up to 140 for an either sex and they reduced the southern zones season to only a week...which has slowed the cross over for sure. Up north you can still hunt the full 5 weeks in most zones.

Yes, we have a good pop. of Mule deer as well about 250,000. It is draw and for sask. residents only. I got drawn for mulie does this year and it took 4 of us a whole 3 hours to tag out with the ML. Next year I will be in for the trophy hunt...lots of 175 class mulies running around, the 190's are here as well but they are tougher to get and will switch up patterns as soon as they feel the pressure. We have a great and under hunted Black Bear pop. as well. Both spring and fall season and baiting is allowed, ave bear is about 275-300 lbs...not huge but alot of nice 6 footers, we also have lots of colour phases...were we hunt bears in the spring we have seen several chocolate, blondes and almost all the blackies have bowties or white marks on them. Other game you can hunt here is: Moose, Elk and Lopers. If your into birds, well we have them too...loads of geese and ducks, 4 types of grouse (sharptailed, ruffed, blue and spruce), Huns(partridge) and of course in the south the old ringnecked pheasants. We have barren ground caribou but only allowed to hunt if your a resident of the 2 areas in the far north they are found. So a hunter haven if you will, probably only second to Alta in Canada due to cougars and sheep...for species you can chase. Our deer and bears are the trophy side, although many 50" bull moose are killed a year and some 350 plus Elk as well. If you are a fisherman well we have that too...so i should rephrase to a sportsman haven.

I am truly greatful to be here, I have been in the outdoors, hunting and fishing since a babe.
