RE: Is a shotgun a good gun?
Absolutely! Either 20, 16 or 12 ga. will work fine. The 12 ga will be your best bet although the others will do fine too. The 12 ga just has a better selection of ammo. You can use 00buck if you will be stalking or jumping bucks in heavy cover or slugs from a stand. I was forced to deer hunt with my 20 ga this year for the first time and I really enjoy it. If the deer dissappear I can always just switch shells and get a few squirrels to make me feel better(all I have is a smoothbore modified choke right now). Next year I will be adding a 12ga and/or a rifled slug barrel just to be a little more effective. Try it, I think you'll like it.

RE: Is a shotgun a good gun?
I use a smooth bore shotgun all the time. I downed a deer with one shot to the neck at 50 yards with 00 buckshot. best to use a full choke for buckshot or an improved for rifled slugs. You can buy a rifled choke tube and use sabot slugs for a little more range and better trajectory/accuracy. With a fully rifled barrel you can only use sabot slugs. Here are my observations of the maximum deer hunting range for each setup based on a 12ga.
Smooth bore with 00 buckshot= 50 yards
Smooth bore with rifled slugs= 100 yards (if your good)
Smooth bore with rifled choke tube and sabot= 150 yards or so
Fully rifled barrel with sabot slugs= 200 yards (if you got a scope)
A shotgun is a very good choice for deer especialy in woodland situations.
