Default Need Help with Mounts

I have messed up royally. I bought my savage 111 in 7mm mag which I love, but I put my own scope on for the first time. I went to the hunting supply store, and I asked the owner what I needed. He gave me a set of see through aluminum scope mounts by a maker that I have never heard of, and can no longer remember. Anyway, I put it on, and I could never get it sighted in just perfect. I was shooting very tight groups though, so I was happy with the gun. Long story short my scope is sliding back and forth, and it throwing me off when I am sighting in because it will tilt slightly. So, I have wasted 25 bucks on the mounts and three boxes of ammunition not to mention valuable hunting time. I was wondering if anyone knows where I can get scope mounts online. I need to get a deal because I am broke. I am going to spend the extra money, and have a gunsmith mount the scope, but I wanted to save on the mounts themselves. Any suggestions.

Take the money you would pay the gunsmith, and buy a Leupold or Burris base. One or two piece base whichever you prefer. then get a set of Burris Signature rings. With this set-up you can't go wrong. You should be able to get everything for around $50.
Natchez shooter supply would be a good place to order them on-line.

Are they tightened down? Is it shifting from recoil? I don't like see thru's but know some guys who use them and although they may not hold zero year to year they don't shift from shooting a few times. I would take them back and explain to the guys they just don't work, then get some post mounts...weaver at least! I assume you have irons as well use them unless you have time before season. You can try tightening them and using some blue loctite on the screw to see if that stops the shifting. I find it hard to believe they are not holding the scope in, unless they are not meant for your scope or the diameter tube...if that is the case you should be able to return them and get your cashola back.

My first course of action would be try and return or exchange them. Then try loctite and retightening or take your gun to this gunsmith to see if he can help you out with the setup for this year anyway. Go with a good base and ring combo by burris or leupold. (if you can make it work for this year and then move upto a better setup when money isn't as tight)

I am a college student, so money is always tight lol. Thanks for both of your replies. The mounts are the right size, but they have not held tight. I don't understand how this happened, but I am not about to put those mounts back on my gun. I am only going to mess up once. I might try to do it again if that is a good idea, which I didn't know if it was or not. Every other gun that I have had has either been a hand-me-down or been bought used, so I didn't have to worry with mounting scopes. I don't think I will be able to take the mounts back. I don't have a receipt or the original packaging. I was planning on spending about $50 plus about thirty to have it mounted and bore sighted. If ya'll think I can do it with a good set of mounts then I will give it a try. I will never use see through mounts again, but I wanted to be able to use my irons and I will use them tomorrow, but I am going to have to take the weekend off, so I can get it set up again. This really pisses me off! more at myself than anything else. I think I will at least let a friend that knows more about firearms than anyone else I know mount it, but thanks.

Mharris...

i had the same problem as you did when i first got into scopes about 5 years ago. i got some no name rings and bases. i learned from others on these boards ( my only way of learning about these things ). now all i use is luepold mounts and rings. cost is about $25.00 for the bases ( 2 piece ) and about $21.00 for the rings. i think it is well worth the extra money and i never had a problem with them yet.
now if you want to get fancy try some tally rings and bases. i hear they are the best. but at a cost!

Go to this website: http://www.natchezss.com Order this part number: BU410588, they're burris dual dovetail bases for the savage rifles, they're two piece so they work for all the savage models, long action or short action. They cost $16.33.

Next you'll need a set of dual dovetail rings. If your scope has an objective lens diameter of 38mm or less then you need the low rings, order this part number: LU49915. They're leupold low dual dovetail rings. If you have a 40-49mm objective scope then you need medium rings part number LU49916, if you have a 50 mm or bigger objective then you need high rings part number LU49918. They're all 20.81 a set.

Leupold rings and burris bases work fine together, they're all a standard size so they're made to interchange. Leupold doesn't make a dual dovetail base for the savage rifles, that's why I recommended the burris bases. By the time you pay the shipping you'll have maybe $42-43 in the whole setup.

If you're capable of changing oil in your car you're capable of mounting a scope using these bases and rings. No need to pay a gunsmith for it just follow the directions on the package. The dual dovetail system is the strongest mounting system made, you'll have no problems with it whatsoever.
