If I had a .30-06 I would likely jump over the 7mm's and go to a .300 or .325 WSM. I have hunted moose my whole life and taken them with numerous rounds. The .30-06 will kill just as well anything else. Elk on the other hand have a reputation ( never hunted them ) of being tougher to anchor and you might also run the risk of having another hunter anchor and claim your animal if it runs. I hunted for years with a .338 win mag and the last few have been using a 7mm rem mag which I love more everytime I drop an animal in its tracks. The 06 and 7mm are too close IMHO, jump up to a bigger bore. Or, save the money and buy a high end set of Binos or rifle scope for you .30-06 which as you say you like alot.

either one will work just fine. I use a 7mm rem mag for antelope to moose and never needed more. I have shot 6 bull elk with a 7mm rem mag and not one required a second shot. I have also shot elk with 300, 270 win and bowwhich also did the job just fine.I contemplated the 300 wm yet again a few years back but stuck with the 7mm rem mag as my all arounderfor my usage, saw no real life advantages to it for my sitaution and the rem mag has done everything I have asked. If I needed bigger my start point would be the 338wm.
As mentioned not a great jump between the 3006 you currently have a 7mm rem mag, more so with the 300wm but if you plan on keeping/using ole trusty you may consider diversifing a little more. All the game you mentioned will fall to an 06' so it's not a need think as much as it is a want! So pick whichever you truly want. Good Luck |

If you want a bigger rifle caliber then what you have now, then get a 375 and call it a day. There isn't enough on game (not on paper) difference between a 30/06 and a 300WindBag or 338 WindBag to make it worth the money.
If I were you, I'd buy some good, bonded, or copper solid bullets for that '06, and use the change from that rifle/scope you didn't buy to go shoot a whopperelkin New Mexico. |

I will have to go with the 7mm. You already have a 30 cal gun try something a bit different. Both can handle the game you are going after, it's a coin toss to me.
