Shotgun for Woodchuck?

I'm planning ahead for the end of squirrel season and want to take woodchuck when they come out this spring. But here in New Jersey we are not allowed to use a rifle to take Woodchuck on the state WMAs and we are limited to #4 fine shot at the heaviest. I'm wondering if a "turkey" type shotgun with a super tight "Hevi-shot" choke using Remington "Hevi-Shot" ammo, a long barrel & a scope will be a sucessful setup. One experienced hunter where I work is trying to discourage me saying that a 'chuck will never let me get close enough to use ANY shotgun.
Any one out there have even occaisional luck shotgunning 'chucks? Is it futile or just a real challenge worth trying?
The Remington people claim that their "hevi-shot" when used with their special choke tube will pattern up to 95% at 45 yards. Could this be enough for occaisional sucsess?
Thanks!

RE: Shotgun for Woodchuck?

I have killed many with a shotgun using 6 shot, find a fresh hole and sit about 20 yds away and wait til they come out.

Also if anyone else out there has experience with setting up a shotgun for woodchuck....share tips/ideas please?
Thanks!

RE: Shotgun for Woodchuck?

I haven't hunted wood chucks with a gun now for over 25 yrs
I use a bow for the job, when growing up we used a 22 rim fire and a 410 shot gun.You can get very close to them if you try.If you spot one
and he sees you and drops back down in his hole, work your way 180 degrees behind him about 20 yds,he will come back out most of the time looking in the same direction he saw you then shoot him in the back of the head with a 22 or shot gun,or bow.
If it is a large one throw it away and get a young one for eating, skin it cut up in pieces, boil it for about an hour,or pressure cook it for 30 minutes.then take it out let it dry and roll in flour and fry till brown, some people roll it in corn meal but that makes it taste too sweet to me.Serve with fried potatoes and onions, and green beans.Pretty good dinner.
