On a similar note, some people focus on the cartridge a lot. Like if someone asks "what is a good deer rifle?" They will get a loyt of answers like .270 or 30/06 or .243, which are not rifles but are the cartridges fired from rifles.

A good deer rifle will of course partly depend on what kind of hunting you do and in what type of cover and at what ranges.

A bolt action Rem. model 700 in 7mm mag. with a 3to 9 scope is a great deer rifle for long range open country mule deer hunting.

A win. 94 lever action 30/30 with open sites is probably a better deer rifle if you are still hunting in thick swamps where shots will come fast and furious at 50 yard white-tails.

The 7mm is its own cartridge. The 7mm-08 is a .308 cartridge that has been necked down to hold a 7mm bullet. Along the same line the new .338 Federal cartridge is the same .308 necked up to hold a .33 bullet. "I think"!

gangly... As several posters have said, 7MM is the diameter of the projectile that is used in a number of cartridges...The most commonly used 7mms are probably the 7MM Rem mag and the 7mm-08...Then after that come the .280 Rem, 7x57 (also called the 7mm mauser) and a host of others...

However, in my experience, most of the time if a hunter simply says he's shooting a 7MM, he's referring to the 7MM Rem Mag, which is the most popular catridge of the bunch...Most 7mm08 users specifically refer to thierchambering as a "seven millimeter oh eight", or a "seven oh eight"...

The 7mm is its own cartridge
The 7 mm is a caliber, not cartridge...
