The 243 Win. was the demise of the 250-3000 as the 308 Win. was the demise of the 300 Savage.

And the 30 WCF keeps trucking right along.....

After shooting a deer this year with a 300 Savage I cant imagine why it isnt still popular. Only bang flop kill I had this year.

If your dad wishes for a 30/30 then by all means grant him his wish. If cost is a concern then why not one in a Marlin 336 or Winchester 94? Either one could be had new for around $350-$450, at least that is what they are going for around here. What happens if you get him the .250 and he is not happy with it? I am sure that he would show happiness, but maybe deep inside he would still be wishing for the ole trusty 30-30? If your ole man is like mine he would act thrilled on xmas, but then the gun might not come out of the gun cabinet during hunting season and he would still be using his old standbye, either the 30-30 or the .270.......

The 25-06 probably took the greatest toll on the 250 Savage. But it would have never swayed folks who had used the 250-3000. Except guys like me who had to have both.:DTrue quarter bore fans are loyal critters.;)

There could be many reasons that your dad wants a 99 in 30-30. That he spelled it out for you should tell you something. I wouldn't try to convince him otherwise. Like others said before, he will probably appreciate any rifle from his son but would still long for his dream gun. Keep looking.

He wants a Model 99. Not a Marlin or Winchester. I'm not getting him anything until he tells me that's what he wants. model 99s in .30-30 are over $675.

OK, I can see why you might want to save a few bucks and convince him that the .25 would be a good rifle. Your pops would probably be happy either way with a good looking rifle like that.

Correct me if I am wrong. But isn't the 250 Savage and the 300 Savage both proprietary cartridges? I think their demise was due more to the advent of bolt action rifles, and by other manufacturers who wanted to use their own named cartridges. To say that a 30-30 in a Winchester is deadlier than a 300 Savage in a 99 would be wrong. But the 94 Winnie could be bought in 1976 for $70. And there were hundreds of thousands of them out there. I do not believe any cartridges replaced the oldies, just marketing. Isn't the 22-250 popular-and remember where it came from.

Good luck finding the rifle that your father wants. I wish my dad was here so that I could buy him one. Tom.
