I will have to disagree with any .22 caliber being adequate for whitetails. For that matter I am not fond of the 7.62X39mm for hunting deer either. For combat, its a tossup. I would rather have an FN in 308 over an AR in anything.

I will leave comments on calibers for combat to people who know. But for whitetail deer, I can't justify using a .22 centerfire of any caliber. It has been considered taboo all my life (40 plus years) and I don't understand why people suddenly think it is okay. A .243 should be the minimum for small to average deer and more gun for a long shot, or 200+ pound bucks. Respect the prey - use enough gun to reduce the risk of a lost deer.

Oh, yeah. I agree with Frizzellr on the 7.62X39 also. Less power than a .30-30. Hold a .223 or 7.62X39 up next to the usual deer calibers and see how wimpy they look. Again, use enough gun for the job.

Guess we will have to agree to disagree. Personally I feel it somewhat irresponsible to go after deer sized game with a .22 but if you can live with yourself then so be it.

what are you asking about? accuracy? trajectory? ballistics? i duno why everybody compares anything you post here about performance on deer even if deer isnt mentioned in the post..unless your a bad dude your not going to use a ar-15 in either of them rounds to deer hunt.....i know a few guys that use a 223 and love it but they hunted all their lives and are what i would call a bad dude..what do u want are u wondering about the 223 is a good bit smaller bullet wise than the 223...and ammo is easier to find for it...a good 7.62x.39 is ahrd to find...u can find a good premium 223 round easily though....
