RE: Question about the WSM calibers?
I think it will be a good cartridge, but I also think they used Gore math for the velocities.

Are you saying Al Gore is not the smartest man in the world...LOL...Actually Robert I wish they had come out with this before the 300 wsm I would have bought it without hesitation. I am betting that it shoots pretty darn close to advertised velocities and no it will not outperform a 270 Weatherby. I too was looking at one in a featherweight and if not for the fact that I own 2 300 wsms It would be in the gun safe right now. I would also like to bring up a side point and that is Winchester/Browning gets criticized for allegedly saying that their rounds are faster or equl to the large magnums and yet the same people ignore the weatherby ad which claims there cartridge hits harder(which is true) but is also twice as accurate. Where in the heck did they get that figure that it is twice as accurate? |
RE: Question about the WSM calibers?
Gore math, thats good. well at least they didnt make the claim of we created the internet. it pushes a .277 bullet faste than the .270win, in a short action, velocities may be a little high, but subtract a little off the top and it still kills deer, elk, bear and a few other things

RE: Question about the WSM calibers?
I shoot a .270 Wby Mag more than any other cartridge, and I assure you it is more than ample for all the game you seek. The .270 WSM, while not quite the equal of the Weatherby cartridge, is so darn close that I don't think any animal will ever know the difference. In fact, if I hadn't been shooting the Weatherby round for 14 years, I'd buy a .270 WSM without hesitation and consider it my "go to" round for just about everything.
Great choice! However, I'd put a Leupold Vari-X III 3.5-10x40mm on top. I can't see any reason why you would need 14x on a big game rifle. In fact, my .270 Wby has a Vari-X II 3-9x40mm, and I've never needed anything with more magnification, even though that is one of the flattest-shooting rounds there is.
