Mossberg Shotguns
It seems that there are many comments regarding Mossberg pump shotguns, mostly negative. I would appreciate further discussion by anyone interested in responding.

RE: Mossberg Shotguns
Most of the negative comments on Mossbergs come from Remington or Winchester shooters who knows someone that knows someone whose cousin's uncle's grandpa had problems with one. Mossberg is a good, serviceable, workhorse shotgun at a really good price. It ain't the prettiest thing on the rack, but it is one of the toughest.

I love my Mossberg 500!!!!

RE: Mossberg Shotguns
Yep lots of negative hearsay on this line of shotguns. All I can say is they (Mossberg) is ISO 9001 certified and what line of shotguns other than Benelli and maybe another is at that level. Coincidentally our Armed forces use both Mossbergs and Benellis. I guess we want our guys killed with inferior equipment.

I've got a Mossberg and have never had trouble with it. It's a great shotgun, in my opinion.

RE: Mossberg Shotguns
I have a Mossberg 835 for my turkey gun. Bought it used. Would not think of giving it up for turkey hunting. It does well ejecting everything except 3.5" shells. Bit rough there---but only need one shot anyway. Good gun---affordable---and a real turkey thumper.

RE: Mossberg Shotguns
I bought one"500" last week and i am happy with it took some pheasents and my Fall tuerky so far. And today especially it was raining alot in the field and i took some pheasents, the "500" was letraly soaking with (water,blood,feather,mud...)and was performing perfect. I Came home and opend it in to pieces (triger,action...)cleand it and put it back together in about 45 minute. " NEVER OPEND ONE BEFORE IN MY LIFE" <img src=icon_smile_cool.gif border=0 align=middle>
So far i think it is very handy. I hope you'll make the right choice. Hunt Safly & enjoy The Sport TOONS |
RE: Mossberg Shotguns
In all the MP units I served in our shotguns were (very old) Remington 870's. These shotguns probably say action in Vietnam, and some of them were not in very good shape. The government 9 times out of ten, buys from the lowest bidder, regardless of the quality of the product. I'm not saying that Mossburg shotguns are bad, but I've never heard much good said about them either. And to mee they just look cheap compared to Rem, Browning, and Winchester. Benelli's are nice shotguns, however.
On a military side note, anyone find it funny that only 1 of our four primary infantry weapons systems are/were originally made in the US. I'm referring to the M16A2 (Colt, USA), the M9 service pistol (Beretta, Italy then USA), and both the M249 SAW and the M240G MMG (FN, Belgium). I wonder if the UN had some say in the matter?! RE: Mossberg Shotguns
I HAVE 2 MODEL 500, EACH WITH CANTILEVER, RIFLED BARREL, 1 12GA, 1 20GA, ALSO 1 835 WITH SAME SET UP, ALSO LONGER BARREL FOR TURKEY. EACH GUN IS ACCURATE, ESPECIALLY THAT 20GA.
THE ONLY THING I DONT CARE FOR IS THE TRIGGER PULL. I AGREE THAT THE 870 MAYBE A BETTER BUILT GUN, BUT $$$ FOR $$$ MODEL 500 IS THE WAY TO GO. |
RE: Mossberg Shotguns
First off I have never owned a Mossberg 500.Many years ago I worked partime at a gun shop and we sold many of these shotguns.I really don't remember any problems with those we sold.I've always bought Remington 870's and have had good service from them.In today's market companies have to make the grade or they won't be around for long.Mossberg has been around for a long time and their record speaks for itself.

RE: Mossberg Shotguns
I've owned several off the 500 series through the years. In fact I've got one in one of my safes now. I have had more quality control problems with the 500's than I've ever had of the Remington or other pumps I've owned. I'm not saying they are junk by any means. I just don't feel they are in the same league as the Remington or some of the other pumps.
I know the military has the 590 Mossbergs, but I didn't realize they had any of the 500 series guns. |
RE: Mossberg Shotguns
i had my 500 for 3 or 4 years now...it would be easier to tell you what i didnt hunt with it...shot tons of clays with it...sometimes not cleaning it for a couple hundred rounds...shooting light loads and heavy magnums all in the same day and never had a problem...i love it!
