Quick wood stock finish improver?
 

Does anyone have a suggestion on a good product to put on a somewhat weathered walnut stock? I am not ready for a full strip and finish yet.

I like using a toung oil finish. one or two hand rubbed coats should protect the wood and make it look good.

I like Howards Wood Wax. Its what we use at the shop on all the high end guns to make the wood shine in the case. Smells good too. We sell it in our shop also, goes for like $4.

I looked for them all and the first one to show itself was the Birchwood Casey "Stock Sheen and Conditioner". It's a white milky stuff that you rub on and buff like a car wax. For all I know, it might be car wax, but it sure worked nice. I bet waxes are purty much alike chemically. That's all my stock needs for a long time.

As long as this thread is started...does anybody have a recommendation for improving an older (15-18 yrs old) Savage stock. This is a run-of the mill 110, purchased at K-mart as a package gun years ago. It appears to be a cheap lacquer spray-on finish. Pressed checkering. It got real wet last year and upon drying out the finish began to fail, peel, flake at the ends of the fore-end, around the tang, etc...
I was gonna strip and refinish but thought perhaps somebody on here has run into this and has a concoction that can go right over the factory finish to re-seal this old stock.
I'm not really looking for pretty, but only a utilitarian seal.

This Stock Sheenlooks like it would fill in the cracks and slow the peeling. My stock was not to that point yet. I'm sure it would be easy enough to strip and try something else if it didn't work. It looks like a temporary finish -I couldn't help but wonder if it was any different than furniture polish. But don't use Stock Sheenin California - the label says it causes cancer in California! I will look on my wife's furniture polish spray . . . If it causes cancer in Michigan, you might want to use the Stock Sheen instead.

I know the type of finish, not the prettiest. Just an Idea, what if you bought some of the textured spray paints in black. paint the stock, making sure you don't get to much on the inside of the stock. I would sand a little first. Will look a lot like a synthetic and should hold up good with a couple coats. Sounds cool.

Thanks guys ... I have considered just about everything from painting to complete stripping. I was trying to find something much like a "Formbys" re-finish product which basically "melts" or chemically allows the present finsih to flow again, smoothing out checking and other problems with a finish. I have used such a product like the "Formbys" thing except it was my grandfathers formula. It used certain %'s of mineral spirits, varnish, and white vinegar if I remeber correctly....but I can't find the formula....I'm not even sure about the white vinegar....
I may just find a decent aftermarket synthetic for the old 110 and practice on the old wood stock as an experiment for future wood stock rejuvination.
