Shell variations in shotguns

I'm going hunting with a shotgun for the first time tomorrow, and I have a really ridiculous question but its something I need to know. I have a 28" barrel with the change-able chokes, could I shoot slugs and 000 Buck out of that? I'm pretty sure rifled slugs will mess up the gun, but I don't know if regular ones would or if 000 Buck is too big of a shot that it would mess up the grooves in the chokes.

Thanks!

RE: Shell variations in shotguns

You want to use rifled slugs or buck shot in a smooth bore. It is best to try shooting some slugs using different chokes to see which are the most consistant and impact closest to the point of aim. With the rifled slugs, the most commonly used chokes would be cylinder or improved cylinder, although I have a few friends that find the modified is the best with their particular gun.
