Lookin for my first gun

Hello everyone, i'm new to this forum. I know you guys probably get asked this all the time but i'm hunting for the first time this year and i'm turning 19 tommorrow. I've fired a few 12 gauges lately with some friends. I've fired a Mossberg 500, a Stevens 12 gauge, and my friend has an over under 12 gauge it was made in brazil or something like that. I'm looking to buy my first gun and wondered what you experts would suggest. I was looking at a NEF single shot 12 gauge because it was only $99 or looking for some used guns but i am willing to spend more money for a better gun, any ideas?

For your first sotgun you cant go wrong with the mossberg 500

I have a couple of Rossi matched pair single shot guns. I have the 12 gauge - .223 combo and the 20 gauge - .243 combo and both shoot very well for what they cost. The open sights that they come with are pretty cheap and junky, but will get you by till you can afford a scope for them. The sights on the shotgun are pretty good and work very well. My son was able to hit 20 skeet in a row with the 12 gauge. The NEF single shot shotguns are really just a step up in quality over the Rossi/Braztech and would make a great 1st gun. The nice thing about the matched pair though is that for around $200 you have both your first shotgun and rifle and they both fit into a nice neat carry bag.

You can't go wrong with the 99$ NEF shotgun as your first gun, thats what I started off with.

i dont have a mossberg 500, but i do have a 835, mossberg builds a great tough gun, i would also not rule out a remington 870, what are you going to be hunting, both guns can be fitted with slug barrels. there is nothing wrong with the nef, and barrels can also be changed out on them within a lower budget, the only drawback is being single shot, they are great little guns, i own two, a .243 and a .204, but for a shotgun and possible bird hunting i would want the luxury of the changeable chokes and quick follow up shot

check pawn shops both 835's and 870's can be bought with interchangeable chokes, changing out barrels is simple, as is cleaning, and servicing, hard to beat either, and i'm sure the 500 mossberg is also

OH YEA!!! welcome to the forums

I would go with the Remington 870, I have a mossberg 500 and often it will eject the shell and the next one will get jammed and won't come up and I end up having to take it out or "dump" it out of the gun. I don't know why it happens but I've never had any problems with any other pumps.

If I were you-I would buy a remington 870 express because it is more gun than a mossberg 500 and you can get whatever barrel/acc. for it that you want. Also your grandson won't wear it out.

great choice, even though i have nothing bad to say about the other pump guns, bennelli, mossberg, or the browning bps, the 870 is for sure a time proven design, if you want a new gun i'd go the route you mentioned, if it does not matter, these gun can be bought very reasonable, i bought an old wingmaster 12ga. for 25$ once, the guy told me it "worked". when i started to walk off with the gun the guy says "hey, just wanted to let you know, that gun, yes i told you it works, but i want to tell you something before you leave with it. sometimes it fires as soon as you pull the trigger other times it may go off in 3-5 seconds." i thanked the guy for telling me the truth and told him it probably just needed a good cleaning, well i field stipped it right in front of him, there was a piece of straw in the pork-chop (the hammer) took it out, gun shot fine, sold it for 100, it was an older gun with a 28" modified choke non-vent rib barrel w/o screw in chokes, but a great gun, that was in the early 80's that guy is still using that 870;)

I just picked up a Remington 870 last week. The price was great so I couldn't pass it up. If you have a Dicks sporting goods near you check the price. They had them on sale for $199 with a $30 Remington mail in rebate and a $25 Dicks gift card rebate.

I have already fired it several times and just love it.
