Addition to the battery.

I currently own a 22lr, 30-30, and a.308. I would like to add another rifle to my battery this year. Any suggestions as to what caliber to go with next?

I would say a 223 or 22-250 if you do any varmit hunting. The 308 pretty well covers the other bases.

I agree with James. The .308 is about all you'd need for big game. Maybe you could pick up an old mil-surp. I would suggest the Swiss K31 7.5x55.

After thinking it over for a bit, I think James B. hit the nail on the head.

Yeah, a good .223 or 22-250 would be great.

i would go with the .223, but if you want a bigger caliber go with the 22-250.

45-70. Single shot or lever. Open sights(scope if you have to). But definitely 45-70. Tom.

How about a 700 nitro? Scroll down to find it and check the price
for the gun and each single cartidge. There are some on this list I never heard of.

The .700 Nitro Express develops an average of 8,900 foot pounds of muzzle energy. However handloaders can push the cartridge to generate as much as 15,000 foot pounds in a modern bolt action. However, doing so makes the action of the rifle firing the cartridge nearly inoperable (especially in the case of a boxlock or sidelock rifle), while at the same time rupturing the casing, and primer of the cartridge. The average muzzle velocity of the cartridge is 2,000 feet per second.

15,000 fp!!!!

Yeah,I have a .223 and that gun is very fun to shoot. Cheap and fun. A box of 20 costs less than $7 anywhere you can find them. Lots of times I find them for around $5 a box. Mild recoil, long distance, good accuracy and the capability to take down game up to about 75 pounds pretty easily. Also a pretty good range of ammo. Other than that I guess that a good shotgun would maybe be a better choice. Maybe a Remington 870 in 12 or 20 gauge.

I think if you ever get a big gun, like a 45-70, you won't be able to stop, and you'll be getting a BAR Safari in .338 next, and a 300 RUM, and who knows what else. I think a 45-70 wouldn't be a bad idea, you could get an H&R Handi-Rifle, they come with open-sights. If you add a limbsaver recoil pad, you'll be set.

You might consider the .220 Swift for no imparticular reason, it's a good cartridge, and I believe it's velocity is greater than the .22-250, but I'm not sure.
