RE: Marlin .30-.30 with or without scope
I've had a 3-9 32mm Bushnell on my 336since it was bought by my dad in the middle 70s. I can't even begin to tell you how many deer that gun has killed. Sounds like you hunt the same type of woods I do (longest shots of about 75 yards). That being said I leave mine on 4.5 power and it stays there most of the time. But I do like knowing that I have the 9 power in case I need it.

I have the same rifle and currently have a Bushnell 1.5x4.5 power scope on it. It works great. I had the williams peep site on it before the scope and the peep worked very well as well.

I also use the MarlinGlenfield Model 30A and I use a 3-9 power scope on it. I like the tip off scope mount that gives hunting my way. I tip the scope down when hunting in the heavey cover or just plain hardwoods. This gives me a better chance to get the sites on a running deer. Then when walking down one of those old logging roads I flip the scope back up. This gives me the best of both worlds in one fine easy to handle small rifle. I can sight the sights for 100 yards and sight the scope for 150 yards. For me you just can't beat this set up. Good Luck to you all.

RE: Marlin .30-.30 with or without scope
I like my 30-30 without a scope. It's my back up rifle, but I take it out when walking or hunting in dense cover. It's so light and I don't have to worry about protecting the scope. Currently I have the factory iron sights, but I would like to see what a peep sight can offer. Either way, I would have no problem shooting out to 100 yds or so.

personally if you want to retain your peep sights, I would reccomend a side mount for your scope. They're much nicer for running shots and stuff like that. With the see through mount it seems to me like im still looking through a scope because of the resticted circle you can see through to your peeps. My father has the side mount on his Win 94 and I have the see through - on running shots I'd rather use his gun.

MY FATHER-IN-LAW HAS THE SAME MARLIN WITH SEE THRUMOUNTS AND A SIMMONS 2X7 I BELIEVE AND IS VERY HAPPY WITH IT. HE WOULDN'T RECOMMEND IT FOR SHOTS OVER 150 YARDS BECAUSE OF THE CROSSOVER ( WITH ENOUGH PRACTICE YOU COULD DO IT ) BUT FOR ANY SITUATION UP TO AND INCLUDING THAT WOULD BE GOOD TO GO.

But you know.... (thinking about my post on the previous page w/ pictures of my Marlin 30AS)....
I am toying with the idea of putting another scope on it. I don't know... With the new Hornady LeverEvolution rounds, a scoped 30-30 could really reach out further than with plain open sights.
In the "optics" forum, I wrote in about the Pentax Gameseeker fixed 4x32 scope. It has a ballistics plex on it and seems like a good scope, but, I just don't know anything about it.
IF I do go back to having a scope on my 30-30, I want something real small, lightweight, and low powered. I still have the old Weaver base and rings that I can re-use too.
